Whenever I travel to India and East Asia, I keep seeing fancy buildings in the Beaux Arts style. To me, they are incredibly ugly. Why are these modern Asian governments so eager to "preserve" them? Discuss.

because they often cant' afford to replace them

Probably because the buildings lend a sense of history in the city.

Because they have come to treasure indoor plumbing?

I remember reading somewhere about the history of Haiti after the slaves rebelled and defeated the French and took control of the country. One of the first things they did was to burn down all of the houses, farms, and industrial infrastructure that the French had built to process sugar cane. Though it was empowering for them at the moment, it created real problems for them as they destroyed their own economic means of production and did not have the resources immediately available to rebuild it.

It's not very environmentally friendly to just destroy old buildings that still function perfectly well. Buildings aren't free, and to knock one down and put up a new will cost at least a buck three-eighty.

I guess America should just go ahead and destroy any building built before 1776.

Has Canada retained any precolonial buildings or were they destroyed in the violent revolution against the Brits?

Well, don't forget 1867 is Canada's year. There is actually some nice stuff along the St. Lawrence corridor.
