Does Thrifting Make You Decadent?

it occurred to me to ask myself this when doing my housecleaning last weekend, in "my old clothes".

As I scrubbed the toilet wearing Borrelli jeans, a Zegna top and Italian shoes, I just had this feeling something wasn't quite right.

Define decadent.

If you mean "wearing clothes that cost enough to feed a village" then yes. If you mean "Wasteful of your resources" then no.

What it does do is make you smug. A smug bastard.

Decadent in what sense? You are still poor since you have to perform time-consuming and dirty tasks with your own two hands wearing 2nd hand clothes. I thrift too but I never let what I wear get to my head....I keep telling myself: you are nothing but a piece of $hit. You are no better than the average Joe until you hit that 10M mark in disposable income.

No one recognizes the brands I wear anyway, so I just take it all in stride.

That's why you get them cheap in thrifts!

If you were truly decadent, you would have someone else (probably several people) to do the housecleaning or else you just wouldn't do it at all...

I can't associate cleaning your own toilet with being decadent.
Someone who disposes of hardly used, expensive clothing might be said to be decadent, but the person who buys them secondhand and appreciates wearing them is not

It is indeed luxuriously self-indulgent by defination to be able to wear fine fabrics on your skin 24hrs a day, no matter the occasion. Its decadent to be able to not be overly worried about splattering nice cloths with your assortment of biological and chemical fuids.

However, my grandpa used to tell me ( rough translation here ) that if you are wasteful of something, one day it will come back to waste you.. (again rough translation to english)

I have grown accustomed to wearing 300 dollar shirts and paying 4 bucks for it. I would rather live in the forrest than pay retail for Hillfiger or Calvin Klein.. so therefore I wouldnt want to piss off the Gods of Thrifting and throw it in their faces. I'm gonna continue appreciating my finds and pray that it continues.

Thank you for this.

Looks like you're one of those people who've had the irony bypass. I feel sad for people who can't see a joke unless somebody puts a smiley in to tell them it's there.

And to cap it off, you're a rude bugger too.

Ya think? If you call someone a smug bastard, I reckon you forfeit the benefit of the doubt.

I wonder if I was the only guy laughing my butt off at OPs sudden "enlightenment".

He is saying that wearing good quality clothes bought at charity shops makes anyone a smug bastard - himself included. You really need to stop taking it so personally.
