Financial Planning as a Career

My father is a financial planner (formerly a CPA) and often encourages me to consider financial planning as a career choice. I am 22 and fairly frustrated with my first job (although getting experience that will put me in middle management very quickly) so maybe it seems attractive to me now but the idea of being my own boss, being able to work from home, and generally being helpful to people make it seem like the perfect gig. Any personal financiers out there who care to comment?

I've been working at a reasonably large Independent Financial Advisers with approx 200 in financial planning.

If you've got the head for numbers and an eye for detail is can be a very profitable business. I was only there for 4 months (summer job) but I was bored out of my mind!

Seems like the kind of industry where a good network of contacts can be amazingly profitable. I was able to put my firm in touch with some of the people who own aircraft at my flying club, and that secured several million of business for them, but I should imagine that the average Joe isn't going to pay a great deal for financial advice in this economy.

No, my uncle owns the firm so he put some work my way for summer. I was basically office ***** for 12 weeks, but I got to meet a lot of people there.

If you like the work then it can be very rewarding. I just wouldn't describe it as an exiting life!

I got many finance planners living around me, but I do not trust any of them. One has to have a good share of experience and market standing to be good finance planner. I suggest that you take as much experience you can before starting up something on your own.

Being a financial planner is all about selling. By economics and financial theory, you shouldn't be able to consistently beat the market unless you have private information. If you can sell your "skills" well, then you have a good job.
