There are 6 nice tactics listed here.

Can you name a few others you know professionals employ?

I don't know if this is "sleazy" so much as "basic psychology". This article, while interesting, is hardly anything new.

Saltricks, I have a heap of reference materials on the subject of sales tactics, consumer psychology, spending motivations, Veblen goods, etc....but I will refrain from posting too much.

Let the other kids get a chance....

The amount of money I'm willing to spend on a luxury item is proportional to the hotness of the sales associate.

I have read some car buying books of a similar nature. Psychology is amazing, my favorite is when the make u feel like you can't really afford it, so you buy it out of spite. Everything from assessing your personality type, to confusing you with numbers. No wonder people stay at home and just shop on the internet.

To influence/impact the customer at an emotional level, that is the game.

The take home message is that you as the consumer have to come forewarned (and thus forearmed), yet at the same time it's a fine line to walk before you become hopelessly mired in cynicism like Reevolting, pinching pennies to lead an impoverished life.

As always, it's about striking a balance.

when a salesman starts with that value bullshit, I just roll my eyes and tune out.

I feel like this strategy works the best for people who just stop in a store and may make an impulse purchase.

Before I enter a watch store, I'll know whether it was "made in their finest workshop" and what its "value" is.

That whole approach just annoys me.

To me, a salesperson should be complimentary but not fake, helpful but not talkative, and knowledgeable above all else.

Yeah, I don't want to hear what an item's "value" is from someone trying to make a sale.  That word raises my BS alert.

A good salesman would say "This dude is an analytical buyer, best to give him the facts, answer the question and let him decide on his own"

The whole notion of taking a basic concept and giving it a new word to make it sound better can awfully transparent. The article also says they dont' sell "products" they sell "romance." Last I checked, selling romance is illegal in most places.
