Sole thickness and shoe purpose (casual, formal, etc...)

Hi,

 

I was wondering if the thickness of the sole of the a shoe tells you anything about its purpose, that is, what occasion it should be worn for: business (formal), casual, or evening dress.

 

Or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I ask for a double sole on my casual shoes and a single sole for my business shoes.

I believe the thicker the sole, the more casual the shoe (assuming you're not talking about the heel, which can be high on formal shoes).
