Sportcoats

Thread Starter
I own one charcoal grey suit but I am interested in acquiring potentially a sportcoat, blazer, or another suit. Wondering what would be the most versatile way to go. I know I will likely need a navy suit soon. I don't really know where to begin and money is a very large limiting factor for me. However, I know I need to get started with a few crucial purchases. Recommendations in what way to proceed as far as budgeting and order of purchases?

Navy suit - single breasted, 2 or 3 buttons and patch pockets but no flaps

When wearing with the trousers, it will be a suit because cloth matches
When wearing the jacket alone, it will be a sports jacket because the pocket style makes it not look less formal

are you wearing suits on a regular basis or rather occasionally? If regularly, then go for a navy suit. If rather rarely, then you should be fine with the grey suit and probably can get more mileage out of a navy blazer / sportcoat. The suit with patch pocket alternative is interesting, but it won't work if you wear your suit in a conservative environment where patch pockets look odd.

^^ this.

Navy itself is incredibly versatile. A navy suit with patch pockets can double as a blazer when paired with odd trousers, etc. Look for brown horn buttons too. That way you can pair it with brown shoes, grey pants, whatever, while leaving your charcoal suit for more formal, black-shoes affairs. Depending on your budget, you could go off the rack or made to measure. For a wardrobe in the early stages, I'd recommend getting something off the rack and getting it incredibly well tailored--figure this into your costs. Going made to measure or bespoke before you know what you like, the finer points of construction, and a detailed knowledge of all the different options available to you can make the process a little overwhelming, and you may come away feeling a little frustrated by the process (this happened to me). Much better to look at a host of different options in a brick-and-mortar store, pick something that fits you well on the shoulders, and get it tailored.

Good luck!
