First Time Getting Alterations on Suit: Slightly Concerned

Hey all,

So I went to the tailor for the first time earlier today to get alterations on a suit that I bought. I was just wondering what the normal process is like during your visit. My tailor had me put on the suit and then he just used chalk to mark certain parts of the suit. I am getting the pants hemmed, the rise let out a bit, sleeves shortened and slight waist suppression.

I had always thought they would measure you and be more precise rather than just making a few marks on the suit which is why I am asking. He also put pins in the jacket so that I could see what the jacket would look like with waist suppression only after I asked and then insisted on leaving it in. I figure leaving them in like that might leave some small holes in the fabric.

He also insisted showing 1/4 inch cuffs rather than 1/2 inch cuffs and said to just trust him and if I didn't like it he would change it without charge. He quoted the total for alterations at $95.

Thanks for your responses guys.

It's normal to have the pins left in.

what you are describing sounds very typical to me

I use two tailors. One uses pins and leaves them in. One uses chalk.

Tailors can use either chalk or pins - doesn't matter too much. If this guy is good, hold onto him. $95 for all of that is a steal.

He knows what he's doing.

1/4" is perfect... anymore is ugly (opinion).

Every tailor I've ever used have always had me wear the garment and pin and chalk it according to how I want it to look.

I wouldn't quite say that 1/2" is 'ugly', but 1/4" is the ideal.
