Hats.. Are they a thing of the past?

This may be posted somewhere else but I could not find it anywhere.  What is every ones thanking on hats are they a thing of the past?  I can remember a time when I saw lots of men with some sort of dress hat with a sport coat or even a suit.  What is today's style or trend or is this even acceptable anymore? If it is still an option post your pics of your choices..

You are right, it is uncommon to see men with hats anymore. However, there are a few that still wear these

They are definitely a niche item and not currently popularized. Funny, when skin cancer is a major concern these days and a hat works well as a preventive measure.

They ceased to become a staple item through the latter 50's. So in that regard, the answer to your question is "yes" as far as the masses are concerned. The hyper-interested/active posters here at SF, however, are not the masses.

Caps are very common and are the "hats" of today. Flat caps, newwsboy and Greek fisherman being the most popular non-baseball style. That being said: I had to get my trading card photo yesterday and wore my Breznev Cassock. The ladies loved the style. Works well with a DJ.

I was at the LA county fair today and it was sunny. I saw mostly baseball caps if head wear was worn. I was one of the few with a brimmed hat and could not help but notice the looks from random onlookers. Wearing a decent hat is an unusual occurrence in Southern California with equally unusual responses. I'll just have to get use to it.

I was in Portland a couple of weeks ago and plenty of people around town there wearing straws against the sun. Ended up buying one myself, just made walking around the city that much more comfortable. Really nice hat shop downtown there.

I have a small collection of fedoras that I rotate through in the winter months. My favorite is a sable colored one that matches my best overcoat.

They are a thing of the past, but then for a majority so is dressing decently for the most part. Most people don't wear a pochette or a tie, but that doesn't stop me. So I don't really care what's 'in' or 'out' and I wear hats quite a bit. I have a few straw trilbies for summer, a grey fedora, a brown fedora, a dark grey lord's hat, a bowler (sees only limited wear), and several caps.

I was at the Goodwood Revival at the weekend and probably more than half the people there were in vintage or period costume from the 40s to the 60s. Lots of men in hats. Lots of trilbys, fedoras and a few homburgs and panamas and it really added a bit of class to the event. Quite a few people did go over the edge a bit from outfit to costume though.

My problem is that I've got an enormous head and so can't get a hat that fits me from anywhere other than a specialist hatter which rather drives up the expense.

I wear a straw Panama type hat most of the summer when outside to protect from the sun. I've had skin cancer removed before (and I'm relatively young) so I now do about anything I can to protect from that reoccurring. And since I'm not about to put the top up on my Jeep or go inside when the weather is great so straw hat it is!

In the fall and winter when it's cold, I wear a newsboy or driver type cap. I'm actually looking for a new one since I misplaced my favorite one sometime late last winter. I'm in the market for a nice tweed one.
