Approval Matrix: Bicycle Toed shoes. When were they actually "stylish"? (besides now, that is)

My brother was showing off his new bicycle toed shoes from Zappos last night.
(He actually ordered a few pairs, and was trying to choose between them)
The wife loved the shoes also. I will post a link to the shoes this weekend.

Since I am brainwashed into "SF approved" styles only (pebblegrain, wingtips, shell, etc), I naturally felt they were ugly and "mall" commonplace. They have that Sketchers, Clarks, Rockport vibe.

That got me thinking, when were these shoes actually cool? Hip and Euro.

Were they cool and avate garde in the early 2000s, for example?
I see 2005 and 2008 threads bemoaning these shoes
When did they jump the shark?

Anyone have some perspective on this?

This may be a good proxy for any trendy clothing item.
Something that was cool and unique that becomes uncool.
Judging from his buy, I think these shoes are alive and well.

The general population wears crap. Go anywhere and look around, 90% of people dress horribly. More shoes like that are sold than Allen Edmonds, Alden, Church's etc combined.

But McDonald's sells the most hamburgers on Earth, is it the best hamburger?

Even Kenneth Cole has stuff less ugly than that.

Yes, but my original question hasn't been answered.
When did these first hit the USA market?
At some point they were "trendy" long before they were common and cliched.
When was that? 2002?

2:36 PM August 17th 2001. After that, they quickly went downhill. Happy? tinfoil.gif

Can anyone else corroborate 2001 ?

Uh, Reev, this question is too subjective to have a factual answer.

This type of shoe was introduced Prada Sport (and some other brands) in the mid 90s. The shape gained traction in the States in in late 90s, and pretty much every secondary brand (say, Diesel) was making this type of shoe by 2000 or so, and in the distressed waxed leather that you see here.

These days, no self-respecting brand makes these.

So, your brother is about 15 years behind trend. FWIW, I never thought that this shit looked good, and I like crazy sneakers.
