Help me! Australian in London for a day

Hi all.

I've got another day left in my London trip.
I'm from Australia (Brisbane)
I've been wandering around the shops here looking at various things.
I've got about 350GBP left to spend.
I've got another 8kg of luggage spare.

I figured I might as well spend it on some new clothes.
Looking for low - middle range stuff, more bang for buck.
Been targeting zara, H&M, tj maxx, etc.

been trying to read up as many of the threads on london as possible, but am running out of time!
figured I'd pop up a thread to ask for any last minute tips on where to shop / what awesome opportunity I could grab before I leave for home.

managed to grab a nice blazer from maxx and a few pairs of nice enough pants from zara.

remember i'm a pleb, and not looking to buy anything too expensive.

Cheers biggrin.gif

Easy. Go to Jermyn Street. See what remnants they have from their summer stock left which will be going cheap. As you are going back to Australia, brilliant for you.

Absolutely go to Harvey and Hudson and buy three shirts for 120GBP which is an excellent deal. (They also have a little known room with jackets, etc., which they brand but don't make.) Ask them about shipping back to Australia as if you select your shirts. etc. in the store and have them shipped home, you will not have to pay VAT. You can also reclaim VAT at the airport, BTW, but it is a bit of a hassle and you are charged a hefty fee by the processing company.

Anyway, Harvie and Hudson shirts are outstanding for the money. They are a respected maker with a bit of history behind them and their shirts are excellent, very nice fabrics and MOP buttons. Unbeatable for the price. Plus, Harvie and Hudson is still a family business run by the descendants of the founders so you might well get served by a Mr. Harvie or a Mr. Hudson. The sons of the founders are in their seventies but still regularly serve in the shops. Very nice gentlemen with some excellent stories. In summary, do not miss Harvie and Hudson.

Perfect. If you are posting on SF you will not want to admit that you did not hit Jermyn street. It would be just too embarrassing.

Let me also suggest that you have lunch at the Waterstones on Jermyn Street -- yes, I mean the bookstore. It isn't really a secret but it isn't very well known anyway. Go up to the top floor where they have a cafe and bar. While not really a gourmet experience, it has decent food, reasonably priced and some of the best views in London.

Now get to sleep. You have a busy day tomorrow.

Before you looking at all the shops, read this 4-part blog on English shoes

This article is from July 2011 regarding the summer sales. You might find some useful hints (Harvey and Hudson are mentioned).

If you have any money left over after buying the shirts there is a Uniqlo in Regent St and another in Oxford St which are good for a few basics at minimal cost.

Lewins in Jermyn St is good value for ties and had a seemingly 365 day sale.
