Matching ties..

Hey guys, this is my first post in this area and I'm sure its a basic one but wanted to throw it out there for any guys out there that can help me out. I sometimes find myself finding great shirt/pants combinations, however, I'm lost at times if the tie needs to match the shirt and pants color scheme, or is it more important that the shirt just match the tie, and the belt/shoes match, so the pants don't matter as much?

I m fine when it coems to matching up my usually outfits or colors that are easy, but when trying to pair colors that are a bit more trendy/modern, i find myself a bit lost. I have a muave(sp?) color shirt, with taupe pants, and i have a tie that matches the shirt, but the tie has grey/and more colors that would lead me to believe i need to wear this shirt wtih black pants instead. But i think i may be over analyzing it, and as long as the shoes/belt match, and shirt tie and pants are neutral i should be fine?

What do you mean by 'match'? It's not essential for anything to 'match', as long as everything complements everything else.

complement, not match
NO SHINY
dont get anything that stands out too much, or disappears with the rest of your clothing
simple geometric patterns are good - e.g. dots, circles,, etc; simple stripes, too
wear plain lt blue or white shirts - you wont have to worry about clashing patterns and scales
navy, gray, muted/earthy browns and greens goes with almost everything (esp if your shirt is white)
a little texture is nice - from wool or weaves (e.g. grenadine)
NO SHINY

keep it simple and you wont have to overthink it

I was referring more to does the tie have to match the pants as well as the shirt, meaning if i'm wearing a tie that matches the shirt nicely, however the pants are brown, does this tie have to compliment the pants as well? Or is it just important to match the shirt to the tie and the pants aren't as critical as far as matching the tie with them. Hopefully that makes sense lol

How does your tie not match pants? You should tone down the total ensemble if there are strong elements...

I really don't understand wtf you're trying to ask here...

Of course the tie has to complement the trousers as well. If two things don't complement each other then, by definition, they clash with each other, meaning they look bad together.

This question is like saying "do my tie and trousers have to look good together, or can I wear a combination that looks fucking awful?"

If they complement they look good, if they don't complement they look bad.

But 'complement' does not mean 'match'. It's not necessary for anything to 'match'. It is possible to wear a tie, shirt, trousers and sport-coat that don't share a single colour between them, but it requires a lot of skill in colour-matching to make sure that they complement each other (and the same applies to patterns as well), so it is more usual for some items to be similar colours; it does not matter which items as long as the resulting look is harmonious.

Pictures would help, but be ready for some abuse!
