Specific Shoe Polishing Question

Thread Starter
I have various pair of Alden, and Allen Edmonds shoes, which I polish using Meltonian Cream Polish in a matching color, using a horsehair brush, and polishing cloth.

I would say I brush them before every wearing, and apply new polish every 4-6 wearings.

Is there anything else I could be doing differently to get a better shine and make the shoes last longer?

I have seen many threads where people use white spirits or pain thinner to clean the shoes, but would a regular automotive leather cleaner work?

Would the Saphire products be better? What is the difference between the creme and the wax? If i switched to these, would I need anything else?

Or should I keep using the Meltonian, and add in any other products?

Thanks.

I would say if you are happy with the results yo uare getting right now there is no need to change anything. If you want a higher shine you should use a wax polish as it gives a higher shine than cream.

You don't really have to strip shoes of the polish. Generally, this is needed after many, many years of applying too much wax polish where it builds up and won't hold a shine much anymore. If you brush before you wear and polish often, but sparingly you won't likely run into an issue. Also, if you condition your shoes first before polishing the conditioner acts as a solvent to loosen old polish and remove some buildup.

Saphir products have all natural ingredients whereas Meltonian, Kiwi and the like have silicones in them, which some people don't like to use on leather in fear that it can lead to drying out of the leather over time. There is really no solid evidence of one being better for leather than another, only people's success in achieving a good shine with one or another.

I would say that the only thing you might want to consider is throwing in conditioning. Either a small amount of Saphir renovateur, or Lexol before you polish would loosen old polish and also keep the leather hydrated.
