Hey felllas. Just picked up this three piece from ebay for a decent price. Already had the trousers tailored a fair amount. (Pant leg opening at the bottom was around 10" had them tapered to 8" and also had the crotch raised and length shortened). The jacket still looks off though. It was advertised as a 40R, but wears more like a 40L. Anything my tailor might be able to do to make it fit better? And anything else that needs to be done to the suit?
Thanks

I don't know... everything else is nice just the jacket seems 2 sizes bigger than you... arms are ok, but is way to long and I'd also narrow it down some inches

Gentlemen, I was hoping I could get some feedback on this suit I had made a little while ago. This was my first "real" suit, a MTM piece I had done by Dung in Ho Chi Minh City. At the time, I didn't know much about proper fit so it's far from perfect. I'm not looking at altering this suit as it's on its last legs anyhow, but I am looking into ordering additional pieces from him and am hoping to slowly work towards an ideal suit.

So far I've identified the following:

  • Jacket should be longer by about 1.5", if not a bit more.
  • Higher armholes.
  • Lower button stance by about an inch.

For what it's worth, I'm a small guy (5'7", 140 pounds) with narrow shoulders to the point that I have not been able to find a single off the rack suit that wasn't too wide in the shoulders.

^^^ there are far too much things that are off, I advice you to change the tailor. I have seen nice black suits, but yours aren't within the category.
Anyway, you seems to be very young, I will just keep learning and get better stuff next time.

Thanks for the feedback, but could you go more into detail about what is off with it?

My tailor options are quite limited, and this one is supposedly the best one in town and has been able to make a SF approved suit in the past. He obviously did not do so in this case, but given my options, I think my best bet is to hound him into making something right. It may be partially my fault for giving very little direction and, since I am young, he seemed to have given me something trendy. On a side note, the suit is a medium charcoal but that lighting does make it look black.

It is not that far off for MTM IMO. Most of the time people complain about "too wide shoulders", the real problem is that the armscye is not located where it should due to many other reasons. Shoulder seam (that seam that goes from collar felt to the top of the armhole) can be made longer or shorter as long as the armscye is in the correct place, and in your case maybe a little extension there would help. Note that shoulder extension is NOT point-to-point measurement extension.

Jacket is also waaay too short, should be at the very least 2 inches longer.

The button stance seems high but that's because it's been placed in proportion with the shortness of the jacket; if you make it longer it should have a lower button stance, but be sure to ask for it. Higher armholes would help too.

I agree with the above; shoulder and chest look ok, but the jacket is way too short. It's too short even for a modern cut.

hello everyone
I had posted pics of 2 of my suits a few weeks ago but the consensus was that the pics were too dark so little could be said about the fit. It was also mentioned that the trousers were too long but as I have since realised I had simply been wearing them too low...

I'm therefore only posting some closer shots of one of the suit jackets, at least this way it won't be too far away and too dark.

I have lost some weight since I bought the jacket so it feels a bit loose - do let me know if you think this can be addressed.

well, a 40R with a 10inch leg opening tells me the suit is probably vintage..?
Which would also easily explain the proportions on the jacket. I think the jacket is small in the chest, but that's probably from wearing the vest and having prominent chest. No much you can do to fix that.
The jacket could be shortened up to what looks like 1.5-2" and it would still maintain good proportions.

Yup, it is definitely a vintage suit. Took it to my trusted tailor today, but was unsure if they would be able to shorten the jacket. They said they can do anything to a suit jacket to make it fit right. So we'll see how it comes out. Ill post pictures after I pick the jacket up on Friday.

Thanks for the advice!

X Post from Aussie thread:

Just found out the difficulty of taking a decent photo of navy pants in poor lighting, with a camera phone and in a bathroom.

Some terrible photos of my new shirt:

My thoughts are that the body fits very nicely, but the upper arm could be taken in a touch on my next shirts. Length of body and arm seem spot on. Any other thoughts?

Photos of the pants I want altered:

Want the pants slimmed from thigh down and the leg opening tapered. On the right track?

Really? That's a pretty bold statement!
See if they can add width to the chest enough to keep the lapels from gaping...

I'm not a tailor, but I don't think the shirt sleeves need to be slimmed at all; it looks good as is. Your feet look disproportionately huge. And I don't think the pants should be slimmed, either. Just shortened a bit. The painted-on look ain't a good one, bro.
