The best part (as per the usual) is the peanut gallery. I love the commenters appalled that someone would spend more than $30 for a shirt.

"$109 for a button-down? Does it arrive with a 16 ounce prime rib and a good shoulder massage?"

if you can get a decent # prime rib, a shoulder massage, AND a shirt for 100$... i'd be over it in a second

If I had that kind of money, I wouldn't be spending it on a suit. Must be nice to be able to swing a hundred bucks for a shirt.

Come on Farhad, shirts for $80-$159? Let's get back to the real world here. We're not all banking that Slate money:) You're my fave tech writer, but this article is as about as detached from the reality of this recession as it could be.

I think it is ridiculous to pay more than $20 for a shirt (find a nice brand on sale or go to Ross or something).

Thanks for the link. I liked the summary of the websites it provided. The comments weren't all that bad.

Oh, let's make fun of the proles. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that we're the odd ones here. The median HOUSEHOLD income in this country is 50k. Most Americans shop at wal-mart, and would blow a gasket if they knew how much we spent on clothes.

i'm sympathetic to this argument, but i suspect it is not that many of these commentators actually cannot afford to spend more than $100 on a button-down shirt, but that they simply spend it in other ways. i have plenty of close friends who would balk at spending $50 for a nice shirt, but will happily plonk down 2k for a huge flatscreen tv - something i would personally balk at.

what bothers me is this feigned outrage that anyone would spend that much money on a shirt - i wouldn't spend ANY money on things like rims for my mustang (or a mustang), or tickets to nascar, or food/drinks at the movie theater, or a playstation, or any number of things. who cares? i don't read articles about those things and then complain in the comments that i would never spend that much money on them.
