How does this blazer fit?

Thread Starter

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I have been doing some googling and that i would get the best opinions from this forum.

So, i recently decided to buy a blazer (was on clearance for 20$, from 100$) it is lined, has functionally surgeon buttons, real breast pocket, double vented, 100% cotton exterior.

I picked the XXL size, the XL seemed a bit to tight on me. I am 6'2. 190 pounds. I am a slim, but not skinny body type.

I feel this blazer is somewhat big on me. I suspect i will need to take in the sides. Do you agree? and what other modifications do you think i would need? Is this blazer drasticly not my fit? I have noticed some bulges/excess material on the back and the upper chest area.

I mostly plan to have this blazer to go out, with the odd time to wear it with its matching black pants. I am not looking for an executive, tip top fitted blazer/suit, but i want something that looks good on me.

I increased the brightness on the pics to make it more visible.

thanks for any input (:

It's not completely awful, especially for 20 bucks. It looks boxy and I wouldn't wear it with "matching" black pants because it will be hard to find an exact match and end up looking like a crappy suit.

That blazer is just awful in all sorts of ways, you need to take it to a tailor and beg them to fix it if you really like the jacket, but it will end up costing a lot more than you paid for the blazer, probably $50-100 im not sure how much tailoring costs in the US as Im from the UK, The Tailor should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong.

Can't tell too well from those pictures, but it looks like the shoulders, chest, and waist are too big? The extra fabric gathering across your back in several places? That's are an indication it fits you really, really badly. At 190, 6'2", you'll probably struggle to find something that fits you in alpha (S, M, L, etc.) sizing. A much better idea would be to start with your chest size and find something that fits your shoulders.

If it doesn't fit your shoulders perfectly, don't even consider it. To find out if it fits your shoulder, try leaning against a wall with your shoulder, if the jacket shoulder and yours hit the wall at the same time, it fits. If one hits much before the other, it doesn't. You can get the other elements of fit tailored: waist suppression, sleeve length (harder with surgeon's cuff), etc.

That's fit. It's impossible to tell you anything about the fabric or construction from those pictures. I can't even see the lapels really. For $20 (hell, even at full $100 retail), I can't imagine it's very good in either category.

At the very least, try sizing down. I'd recommend not wasting your $20 though.

Yeah, it is.

This is a trap we are all tempted to fall into. "True, this is nowhere near my size and it is the color of bird vomit, but it is only $40! I'm gonna buy it!"

If something makes you look awful, you should be willing to pay not to wear it. If your clothes look awful, they look awful. You don't get points because they are cheap. No one looks at your jacket and says, 'That jacket is horrible and doesn't fit at all. On the other hand, he only paid twenty bucks for it so I will give it a C+."

I mostly said that because for 20 bucks it really isn't a COMPLETE abortion. By SF standards it is bad but I have seen so much worse in real life.

Return it or burn it. See if you can get back to the store and try on that smaller one and snap a photo. One massive reason I will give you is to look at the side photo. You have no chest. The jacket hangs on you like a dress. Also, the shoulders are too wide though, remarkably the sleeve length is perfect. It is just not working at all on you. You get big points for taking the time to provide multi-photos and for this we thank you! Welcome to Styleforum.
