Custom Made Shirts - Your Advice Please?

All,

I've come to the point in my life where it is time to start having some dress shirts made. I have an odd shape to me (apparently?) wherein basically all OTR shirts i buy to wear with a tie or in a "cuffs buttoned" setting need to have alterations made.

This brings me to my question: any advice for having them made?

I have questions of a few types, and so i was hoping with your help on any or all of them.

Q1 - Choosing a tailor: I live in a fairly affluent suburb of a major city, and there are a few tailors in the area. However, nobody i know has had shirts made, so i can't get a direct reference there. I have an alterations tailor, but that is mostly a relationship of convenience (his quality is "good enough"). As i go about looking at tailors to use, what are some things (hallmarks of quality, questions to ask, prices to look for) i should keep in mind as i look to select a tailor to try?

Q2 - The "commissioning" of shirts: (fyi, not sure if that's what it's called, but hope i get my point across) I have a fairly good idea of the major style points i will hit, but are there any oft-forgotten pieces of shirt construction i should remember to discuss? Any fabric suggestions, or suggestions of how i should make fabric-based decisions?

Q3 - Any recommendations in Westchester County, NY?

In advance, thanks to all for their wisdom

Through SF research and other inquiries, I've decided to go to CEGO to get some shirts made - I can't tell you directly yet because i'm not going in until next month, but if you go into NYC often enough, this is definitely a very well-respected option at SF.

unbelragazzo - i appreciate your response. i get into the city often, but very rarely during business hours, which is why i've decided to go with a local tailor in westchester (if possible)

Is there a reason you need to bump your own thread every hour?

as i've clearly offended with my request for help, i'll try to limit to once a day

If I lived in NYC, I'd try Cego.

The main details on shirts themselves that I care about are:

-a collar proportionate to my neck, face, and jacket lapels and collar
-sleeves long enough and cuffs snug enough on my wrists so that my cuff stays put when I raise my arms
-a slimmish body and arms full enough so that they don't strain at the elbows when bending my arms
-hand-shanked buttons (Machine-stitched buttons unravel too often ime. And having them shanked makes buttoning a bit easier when you're in a rush, which I too often am).

Thanks emptym, i would not have thought of the hand-shanked buttons! That will definitely get added to my list. I'd love to try Cego or the like, but since i both live and work in the 'burbs, unfortunately it would require me taking some time off during biz hours to do. If i can find a local tailor that works, i can schedule some "meetings" on my calendar and duck out for appointments.

Seriously, CEGO. It will be well-worth the trip.
