So I went in to my local NM store that has a salesman and tailor that I trust quite a bit. I'm in search of a sports coat that I can wear at work (business casual) and also to go out with similar attire and/or possibly jeans. I already have a Zegna S black velvet sports coat that I love and a dark blue Burberry corduroy. The two jackets at the store that I really liked are an Isaia grey jacket and a Tom Ford brownish-blue jacket. Both suits have a similar checker-box style pattern. The styling on them is very similar; fitted to my body with peak lapels, and 3 pockets. Obviously, the Isaia is priced "better" than the Tom Ford.
My concern with the Tom Ford is the color; the grey of the Isaia makes it extremely practical. I can add any color to it and it will work. Matching pants should be a non-issue as well. The brown of the Tom Ford makes it at least seem much more limited in choices. That being said, the color, to me, is a bit more interesting and outside of my normal color palette. Also, the Tom Ford is a "thicker" jacket, with much more material. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. For some reason, I think I like the Tom Ford more, although the suits are very close to each other.
So, would you go with the more practical color to start or go with the one that is more interesting? Is it true that Isaia's can be found pretty regularly for cheap on sale?
