Some Serious POOR BEHAVIOUR in MC

At StyleForum we are lucky in that our very large community has (on the whole) a great deal of openness and respect for new members. We are also blessed with moderators who rule with the lightest possible touch which greatly enhances the possibility for outspoken and controversial opinion. But seriously. There is some major shit creeping in, and I would like to call for more hard-line moderation approach.

These threads are on the front page, and in my opinion stand as good illustrations as why:

  • New members should have 30 posts before they can create a new thread in MC.
  • Posters whose language is not clear, punctuated and English should be deleted. Obviously "English as a Second Language" shouldn't be punished, but people such as Spalla Camicia are obvious examples.
  • Troll posts should be entirely removed from the system
  • Anyone complaining about the behaviour or product served by a business should make a clear, reasoned case supported by evidence where appropriate.

I trust our moderators. They are users of the forum just as we are, and their judgement is sound enough that if they make a judgement call, then it will be thought-out and reasoned. The functionality of this forum has been degraded with the influx of junk, washing onto our shores.

My Case:

Please Define "Evening Casual Attire for Men"
No context, no explanation, just a one sentence post which is utterly useless to anyone.

Alert Scam in Naples tailoring one member involved as scammer
A previously banned member, almost illegible English, zero proof of claims. A huge waste of time and space for anyone unlucky enough to read it.

Concealed Carry
A topic that could have been searched for, turned into a complete farce by Harvey_birdman and all the other abusers. The member shouldn't have been able to start it, and our senior members should be a bit more gentlemanly when dealing with newcomers.

Sales thread in MC
Just in the wrong place.

I've always been a big fan of the way this place avoids draconian rules but still remains sensible, but I cant help but feel that MC needs a little nudge back onto the straight and narrow.

You may become a product of your own suggestion what with that title and all. Just sayin'

If only it were the case!

I'd far rather read a forum that I'm too illiterate/ungentlemanly to post in than one filled with swill.

Having said that, I will alter for the sake of more sensitive eyes.

Nah man. I believe the rule was swearing in thread titles get you time in teh hole. Just looking out mate.

Check this out. The language in all caps was added by the mod who put it there in place of the swear word.

One of my faves: I am graduating today & DESPITE MY EDUCATION, I AM STILL DUMB ENUF TO SWEAR IN TITLES

You are spending waaayyy too much time on the Forum.

As far as its original intent, to discuss men's style, there's only so much one can learn before one just need to do his own things. Too many blind followers/sheeps around. All the original interesting dresser have left, either outright or started their own blogs.

Buy&Sale are just full of crap, old sh*t that sellers somehow think are worth something facepalm.gif (Like the MC, all the good sellers have developed their own website to sell quality stuff)

Current Events are the same people debating the same stuff, somehow under the illusion that they can convince the other party to change minds baldy[1].gif

Health & Fitness are noobies asking the same question, asking for shortcuts or seeking answers that common sense should have provided the answers in the first place ffffuuuu.gif

Food section is populated by about three knowledge people talking stuff that average Joe don't know/care

Lifestyle section is just an excuse to brag to strangers about expensive stuff in order to achieve some self-validation/worth. lol8[1].gif

Has hermes man also left ?

IMO, spallas thread is the most entertaining one in the last month in MC.

MC needs more jokers like Hermes man and Spalla. There is a limit to what Reevolving alone can do

Your suggestions in principle are good. But reality has a different outlook and it would be nigh on impossible for someone to maintain centralized control. In any case, even if a decentralized control system could be implemented, it would turn this forum from something light hearted to something more regimented and serious. We are not after all, robots. Nature has a way of ordering itself, even the most avid troll poster will stop posting if everyone ignored him. The forum is not perfect, but it does not have to be.

My suggestion for improvement would be more related to new members whom have questions like: whats the best suit, what brands ... etc etc... This can be remedied for them in the form of an external site linked to SF where members can vote / add to a database and ranking system.

Hermes Man was far more interested in following fashion pop subculture than most of us, he probably did not feel that this forum was a perfect fit for his aims. After all, in many of his threads/posts you can count only one or two people out of a hundred that would agree with his opinions. I think there is room for a wide range of personalities on the forum, but nature has an implicit trend / law of "birds of a feather ..."

I would love to have wikis and articles written, that would be great resources for noobs and older members alike. I am actually sending out welcome PMs to new members showing them where to post "small questions" and introduce themselves, but the fact remains that if information is not readily available, we are going to get "what to wear to a wedding" threads. If some volunteers would care to PM me to write articles about or start wikis on common subjects that bring new members to Styleforum, that would be great.

Topics include:
Shopping guides (for NYC, LA, SF, London, Chicago, etc...) - something as simple as a list of stores, address and contact info, and type of clothing/brands sold
Wedding clothes - we've been through this 100's of times since this place started. There's a wealth of knowledge scattered through 10 years. If someone could consolidate some of this information, it would be a great resource for everyone
Suit terms and conventions, how to choose, what are good value propositions - same as above.

"Wedding clothes" and "men's suits" constitute the bulk of what people look for when they come to Styleforum.

Another thing that you guys can do is to tag threads that new members might find useful. This will make search engines more likely to bring them to those threads. I spent 1/2 an hour last night doing just this.

J and I are only 2 people, and we are already seriously overworked, as are our moderators. Changes like this can happen when members of the community can step up.

Cheers,

Fok.

Not to blow horns but here is a TOS sticky I put up in my forum:

http://abledartsbathroomwall.yuku.com/topic/860

I wouldn't expect something so dry here but you could do up a simple rules post at the top of each forum.

However in my experience a lot of noobism is unintentional and erupts unpredictably even from the best of us, and moderation is best done against patterns of behavior and not individual acts. I think what the OP is reacting to is a storm of simultaneous individual acts. That happens.

I like this place! Now, who wants to see my holster?

I'm not sure how people with post counts of 4k and 7.5k respectively can say that I spend too much time on the forum.

None of the issues I raised actually had anything to do with current state of established members, or the quality of legitimate threads. The problems I am raising are to do with the influx of poor quality threads and the prevalence or near-uniteligable drivel.

You are free to lament the loss of Vox/Manton/ect as you see fit, but none of our dearly departed would have had an impact upon the issues raised.
