When it comes to clothing, always buy the thing you just about can't afford. That way, you build a wardrobe of quality, not quantity.

Really good advice on this thread.

My suggestion would be to work out your clothes/shoe-care techniques before spending too much. Just like the best first car is often a beater, there can be some value in having a cheap pair of shoes in the early weeks to figure out how to polish it properly or what pieces of furniture you're likely to scuff it on at work. Or a cheap shirt that tests out your detergent or ironing machine or launderer.
