How do you keep your head warm in winter when you're wearing a suit?

This is a serious problem up here in Canada. I wear a suit for work and it can be very cold. There may be some grown men under 50 who can pull off a fedora, but I don't know who they are. And wool hats ("toques" up here) with business clothes make you look like a 90s male model.

What is the solution? Is there one?

Form > fashion. If it's cold, wear a hat, and give up caring.

Although Chicago doesn't get as cold as Canada and I'm not outside for long during my commute.

what about the rest of your head?

There are plenty of types of proper felt hats other than 'fedora'; something with a narrower brim can easily be worn by younger men.

earmuffs.....

Bit broad of a statement considering how vast the country and it's climate is. A warm Chicago winter would be colder than anything we get here in Vancouver. Toronto and Montreal are pretty identical to Chicago.

Back to the topic,

What do people think about a wool flat cap. Or too casual with suits?

I think the cap is probably the best solution, or maybe a stiff wool bucket hat. But neither one of them are great. I really don't know about earmuffs, except maybe really bright f-you ones.

I have an astrakhan coat and hat that I wore for awhile, and still wear in the evenings, but one on the way to work (with just the coat) someone told me I looked like Ric Flair.

I second the vote for Astrakhan.

Silver/gray would be really cool. But black is cheaper.

I've been known to wear a knit cap with my suit and dress overcoat during the bitter cold in these parts.

You can get the wool flat caps with earmuffs attached. That would be a good option if you're afraid of the fedora. Or hell, just skip the earmuffs- your ears will be cold, but you get used to it, and the rest of your head is much warmer than it would be otherwise. And it allows for nicer and better looking caps- Irish tweed, for example, would be a great option.

You really shouldn't be scared of the brimmed hat. A moderate sized brim with tailored clothing and an overcoat looks fine, but if you don't wear it naturally it'll look off on you. Basically, if you don't think you can pull it off, you can't, and if you do, you can.

I'm 44 and I quite commonly wear a fedora or a flat cap. It's all about attitude.

Don't wear it to be ironic and don't be embarrassed because then your entire attitude is off and you'll look uncomfortable.

Just be very matter-of-fact.

If you're wearing a suit and tie, then a serious hat is the way to go.
