In praise of Chalk Stripes

I know it's been discussed before, but it's been a year or so. This thread is great, as it's chock full of old-timers and those banned.

Personally, I mostly avoid all striped suits, but chalkstripes have always had a place in my heart. They're classic, slimming, and mean business. I rather like them in a single breasted suit, since a chalkstripe DB can seem a bit too ultra-business, but that's just me.

One of my favs:

Man, that is one great looking suit, and worn with what looks like a solid gray wool tie? well done, will you provide details on all items? i've been lookin for something to do for an Isaia suit this year (off the rack or MTM), and have been considering some form of blue chalkstripe.

I really like the color of the suit, and I always like stripes. It gives it more character. The chalk-stripe gives it a kind of retro feel to it icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif. What color would you call your suit?

That particular one is from yfyf. Here's another one he popped up about 6 months ago, from Liverano:

Chalk stripes are my favourite type of stripes, but unfortunately they are often seen as over the top in America. It can be hard to get away with anything other than a faint pinstripe in most business situations.

Man, is there any yfyf outfit that doesn't look great

Absofuckinglutely love chalk pinstripes, particularly on a charcoal suit. Also quite like them on a black suit, dont know why.

I personally love chalk stripes. Far more than pinstripes.

I don't like the penultimate one much; seems the stripes are too close together. Looks too busy. The first six are all very nice, especially the double-breasted ones. Don't like the seventh.

The goldfish pin needs to go. Don't like any jewelry on a suit. Other than that both are nice but the blue is better than the grey one NOBD posted w/ it.

I think chalk stripes have to be really bold to work, and then you've got to be really bold to wear them properly. No half-heartedness. I ususally think that grey chalkstripes don't work that well and that blue is by far the best ground, but Spoo's last outfit above is really quite excellent with a fantastic cut (who is the maker?). One thing: double-breasted with chalk stripe - Nooooo! Well, not unless you want to look like an old-fashioned bank manager.
