shaving... - Page 2

Personally I like my old Gillette's. I am pretty sure the newest one I have is from the early 60's. Super speeds work great and are tame shavers. I like the feeling of using a (properly cleaned) razor that is 50+ years old. It makes me think that I am shaving more like my grandfathers.

I second badgerandblade.com I have learned a wealth of information from there. Just do not think this way of shaving will be cheaper than using disposables or Mach III's. I went into it with that mind set and currently have 4 de razors, 2 brushes, and tons of different creams and soaps. Not to mention my collection of aftershaves.

BandB has a sub form on straight razors. I currently am satisfied with DE but we all know how long that really lasts.

It's cheaper in the long run. The acquisition disorders wore off after a few years with me, sold the extra razors and just keep one shaving soap and bottle of A/S handy.

Cost of double edge blades alone makes this worth it.

And yes, the old Superspeeds rule. I alternate between a Merkur Futur and 40s/50s era SS.

hah yep, I went with a Merkur HD which was great (and I still have it), but hopped to the straights within weeks. Never looked back.

I keep it pretty budget friendly. I have a simple Edwin Jagger with faux ivory handle and really enjoy proraso. The big ben blades seems to work best with this one. I tried the feather blades early on and took half my face off. My elderly Pops made me check my blood sugar level with him machine as he was sure I had diabetes! satisfied.gif
I need a better brush if anyone has suggestions. I've been ordering through Superior shave web site. He is a great guy with lots of details on his page.

I would like to get into the straight razor. I had my first pro the other day and it is fantastic!

I have a Gilette Super Speed (mine has a red tip) and it is the only razor I now use. I tried a few others (Merkur and some other vintage Gilettes), but the Super Speed works best for me. I love it and 10 cent blades are a huge plus.
