I received this new cup, but is it for coffee?

I ask because the handle became hot from the coffee, and I almost split it inside my boxers now.

is that for keeping shaving cream warm?

put hot water in the bottom cup thing, then place the shaving cream in the top cup thing, kinda?

Yup. Looks like a shave mug to me. I've got one similar to that, pewter cup, with a ceramic "minipot" type deal that fits inside of it.
