re: Adult soccer league

I'm in one and the best part is having a beer or two at the sideline, and also afterwards.......

Part of your problem is that you tie in whether you have fun or not on a specific time period. In this case it's the nighttime as your set time to have fun. Sometimes I had such a great eventful daytime that I would feel no need to go out to have fun. (Though I still out out plenty).

There's plenty of interesting/fun things to do that don't involve drinking. They can range from being rewarding and complex or appeal to a more carnal instinct. Both types of activities are enjoyable for different reasons, and many overlap between the two.

Examples in no particular order:
Ski/snowboard - Ever heard of apres-ski? Almost as fun as the act of skiing itself
Raquetball
Adult Soccer league - What adult sports league doesn't involve drinking during and afterward?
(Solo)sky dive jumps - Celebratory drinks after such a rush is a must.
Road trip with your buds to nowhere in particular - What's a road trip without tricking?
Find new concerts - Who goes to shows and doesn't drink?
Get yourself into the best shape of your life
Cooking class - Food is best eaten while drinking wine or a beer
Get baked with some buddies (and not binging)
Find a fuck buddy - Kind of hard to do unless drinking
Read something worthwhile
Start a side business
Restore cars/ boats
Water skii - Beers on the boat
Recreational mushrooms
Explore nature's natural beauty
Mountain biking
Hang out with drunk people while acting drunk - This is just stupid.
Cook a meal for some guests - Once again, some sort of alcohol with a meal is ideal.
Talk to someone from a completely different background/viewpoint than you - Best time to do this is when drinking
Film society
Puff a tasty cigar while watching the sunset - Scotch and a cigar, can't beat it
Play euchre or other card games - Come on, who plays cards and doesn't drink?
Travel to distant places - Part of travelling is going out at night. Unless you're travelling in Muslim countries, this usually involves drinking.
Have sex out under the stars in just a hammock
Go whitewater rafting - Celebratory drinks after.
Find a climbing gym
Learn a new language
Kayaking
Join a theatre group or even acrobatics
Play darts for money - Darts and no drinking? Blasphemy
Train for a marathon
Fina a deep meditative state - Few things are as deeply meditative in Western society as drunkenly staring at the bottom of your beer glass at the end of the night.

A significant portion of these activities, as I've highlighted, would benefit from drinking during or after.

You know, it's not that hard to develop a respectable alcohol habit. If you're having trouble, hit the nearest 12-step and ask for pointers. Bonus points if you ask those dudes out for a drink.

Maybe down the line but right now I'm going completely sober so I can "Get [myself] into the best shape of [my] life".

go to a spin class 3-4 times a week. it'll burn you out during the week and you can still have some drinks on the weekend without worrying about the calories.

besides, how will going sober get you in the "best shape your life," anyways? there are plenty of ultra-fit people who booze it up. you just gotta balance it.

The past year of my life I've fucked up all progress by going out and getting drunk and eating a ton of food on the weekends (sometimes weeknights too). I need to get out of that scene completely for a bit and be completely sober for a while. Later on I'll go back to having a drink or two every once in a while but right now I gotta commit to going sober.

Probably true, that is why I drink..

However, in the spirit of the OP's post I still do not feel it is required to drink to have fun in any of those activities. In fact, many I've done stone sober before, during, and after the activity. Too many use alcohol as a crutch instead of an enhancer.

serious post: good for you for trying to cut out the booze. you can do most anything you do with booze. if your life revolves around spending all weekend at a bar, then.. it sucks. try lasertag.
