Calzado Pepay, Bespoke Shoemaker in Santiago, Chile Thead - Page 6

Hah, I know. I had the same worries when I first saw the store too. But then I noticed, hecho a mano in the window... asked if they did bespoke and they did. Figured I didn't have much to lose. After talking to the guy who measures you and designs the shoes with you, I was really encouraged that the shoes might turn out how I wanted. Of course, we have to understand that Chilean shoe styles aren't SF approved. Dare I say Guantes. ug

Looks like we have enough people for an SF meetup. Maybe when globetrotter comes to SCL?

Santiago may be a hidden sartorial gem. I won't go into clothing too much, but I was quoted around 325.000 CLP for a bespoke suit from what seemed like a very reputable maker recommended to me by my MTM shirtmaker. That's like 650 USD.

Those are terribles, but every man here has one of those (including me). We don't know any better though, it's not much people's fault. You can find Church's and Alden in some stores, but they are very expensive (Church's are U$700 aprox a little overpriced IMO.). I'd like to find some AE, but it seems is not happening anytime soon.

Let us know who is the maker of the suit, I know a few but they are known established stores and I don't wear suits but pants and odd jackets.

Yeah, I've seen Alden and Church's here. Around 100 bucks or more than the prices in the US.

I can't seem to remember who the maker was. I'll let you know when I remember. The men at boden in Providencia recommended him. I also don't wear suits, but was asking about them.

What did you think of Boden? I have one of those and coincidentally for me, they have the same measurements than my Brooks Brothers slim fit shirts. It's nice to configure the shirt almost any way you want it, but I didn't like the quality of the buttons. I definitely prefer my Brooks shirts overall, and for the price, they can't be beat when there are sales.

By the way, there's a Boden in Santiago Centro, which is closer to your location than Providencia. I remember talking to the guy at the Providencia store about suits, but don't remember either who was the recomended maker.

Yeah, the buttons leave a bit to be desired. Don't like plastic buttons, but it's a minor detail in my book. In the more expensive fabrics they use MOP buttons. I guess I could always sew my own buttons on them. I own four shirts from Boden now. They're good. Better than ModernTailor. Brooks Brothers doesn't fit me well. But the Tux shirt I had made is a bit too small on the waist. I didn't think I'd have to worry about it but after washing it, it definitely pulls when I sit down. I could get rid of my pisco/beer belly and all the problems would be fixed though. hah

The only thing about Boden is I wish they had more fabric selection. There isn't much that I like there that could be worn as more of a casual shirt. The collars are all really nice though. I like that I'm able to change the height of the collar. Helps me with my long neck.

I didn't know about the location in Centro... I liked the guy that helped me in Providencia, so I just stuck with that store. The tailor they recommended is like 2 blocks away.

I was just going to ask about Boden, I got my measurements taken yesterday evening in Ripley's Alto Las Condes store. There is a Boden stand inside, and ordered a spread collar blue striped shirt. Will report on the fit once I get it, it appears most shops slow down during February!

Hah, I bet we will have the same fabric shirt. Nothing like a staple blue striped shirt. Boden does a good job. They train their salesmen well too. The guys I've worked with at the store in Providencia knew all the SF approved details that I would want. For a country of people that largely don't dress that well, it has been a surprise.

Hey there, like musicguy said, there seems to be a decent group of Styleforumers in Santiago so I guess that the proposed get together is a great idea. I'm about to relocate there in about a month (I'll be there on the week of the 13th of February as well, but I don't think I'll have too much free time).
It's funny, when they told me at work that I was going to be transfered to Santiago instead of Rio de Janeiro like I was expecting I spent a lot in new shirts and suits, but apparently I could have waited until I got there. I never thought that there would be any shopping opportunities in Chile because every Chilean I know (and I know a few) dresses like crap.
See you all in a month.

Nice to hear you'll be around here Madrileno, I'm looking forward to that get together!

What's your opinion on Cardinale shoes? I've got two pairs, a black Oxford captoe and a brown Blucher wingtip, both with leather soles.

They fit me just fine and seem good quality to me, at least compared to Guante!

I'm not in Chile yet, and I've never heard from that brand. Is it local?

Pretty sure it's a local brand. Never been inside the store, but have seen it.

cool, I'd love to go a meetup, but don't wait for me, it looks like I won't be able to get there till april or may at the earliest. I was supposed to be there a few weeks ago and my plans had to change.

I've seen them plenty of times, and they seem to be just a little better than Guante, but overpriced. They are still squared pointed shoes and IMO they look weird.
On a side note, there's a Loake's store in Isidora Goyenechea 3000 I visited the last month which looked good, but saw nothing I liked.

That's very interesting, music. If you do order from there, I would love to read anything you might want to post about it. I wonder: What sorts of silhouette do Chilean bespoke tailors traditionally favor?

From what I've seen, squared, unattractive and oversized (and mostly in black fabrics)
