college wear advice (yeah...again)

Thread Starter

Hi guys. I've been reading nearly all of the college wear threads for the last couple days, and most of them are a few years old, and I think I need some more specific advice.

Right now my wardrobe includes

Footwear:

moccasins

brown Aldo dress shoes (I know, not super nice--at least they're not square-toe)

red espadrilles

a few other decent looking but not very high quality pairs of boots and lace-ups. I dislike sneakers.

Pants

Levi's skinny jeans - These are skinny but don't look too bad on me, because they're dark and I have a skinny build.

A couple pairs of Euro-made slim fit chinos-- these are nice

a few other pairs of pants that look good, but aren't the best quality. topman chinos, etc.

Shirts

Nicest thing here is a button up from Norse Projects. I have several pretty well fitting button-up shirts, though

Lots of american apparel blank Ts

A few sweaters, and a few good looking jackets that I get compliments on but aren't really great quality.

I do have a tailored J.crew cord blazer though, which looks pretty good

My goal with dressing isn't really to "impress" anyone. In my hometown of Utah, it's easy enough for me to get flashy shit from UO and get compliments. I am, however, looking for clothes that are nice quality, and will last. And I'm okay investing in one piece at a time. I like taking care of my clothes. I work as a security guard, and, if I'm careful with money, have around 300$ every couple weeks to invest in clothing (more if I save up). If I'm lucky, my scholarship will renew, which means I'll have around 1k to spend in a few weeks.

Nice quality boots. Right now I'm looking at RW gentleman's travelers, thorogood 685 epaulet, although the ones I really like are the Alden indy boots.

A.P.C. raw denim - I've been to the A.P.C. website - what do people recommend as a first pair? I'm just looking for something very basic and standard.

more button up, slim fit shirts - I'm pretty skinny. I have several shirts from topman that fit well in S, but aren't the best quality. Where should I look for higher quality shirts? -- I have enough cheap basics, so I'm okay with spending around 100$ per shirt, if it's something I like.

Outerwear - I want to invest in one nice jacket before winter rolls around. Maybe something around the 300$ price range, although I'd be fine with more/less, as long as it's something I like.

I have a tailor that I've taken things to in the past. She's a little overpriced, but the only person I really trust in the area.

What else should I be looking around for? Any other thoughts?

Yeah  I realize pretty much no one in college gives a shit. It's just more of a personal preference. Thanks, I'll check out the rugby

most people dont give a shit and thats fine, do you, do it for yourself
most guys in my programs look like crap on any given day, couple wear lacoste polos and ralph lauren oversized logo rugbys but thats their choice

it's a bit generic, but if you care then try an outfit like:

Top: OCBD button up (Rugby is slim enough, or try Brooks Brother if you really want to spend. TBH, they are comparable though BB is tailored slimmer)

Jeans: APC

Shoes: Hi-top Converse (I would also agree with a pair of Vans but the midsole always comes loose/crack open from the edge)

If you experiment with that look and through in different patterns for the shirts and coats, it should be fine. I am no shoe expert so maybe you should check out those specific "baller" threads

I have good experience and hear positive things about Club Monaco although I am not sure there is one in Utah...

I'm not really that into the high-top converse. I don't think they look bad, I just don't really dig them. but I'll go search around shoe threads for a bit. BB extra slim seems like what I'm looking for

If you can afford them, Alden Indys are great for university. I wish I'd had mine then.

The less you care about what you wear to university, the better you will look.

Truisms are helpful?

One vote against APC unless you really want to try out the whole raw denim thang. Shit will be uncomfortable for weeks/month....denim feels like crap. Don't get me wrong, it can be worth it for the end result just know what you are getting into. I'd go with RRL on sale on ebay...you can pick some up for around a bill. I find their lighter jeans to be pretty awesome as chino replacements...specifically the grey and cream color.

Shoes, has anyone suggested clarks DBs yet? I can't imagine not liking sneakers but to each their own, you sure you don't just dislike sneakers with shitty profile (clown shoes)? Quality boots...Wolverine 1000 mile, hard to find tho. Guidi, Alden, Epaulet has some....how much do you want to spend $150-1K

Shirts: Gitman and Epaulet make good slim fit stuff. Some of J Crew slim fit stuff is quite nice for 30-50$ (mostly outlet)

Jacket/Coats: Lots of good sales with this stuff right now. TOJ makes good stuff. Can't really go wrong with a well made Harrington, Varsity, bomber but Utah, you probably want something thicker. Some of RRLs stuff can be grabbed cheap on ebay and it is THICK (fits big tho)

Build your wardrobe slowly, work out (most clothes look better when you are slim and fit). Good sales currently. Check out sales thread, Ebay kop thread.

OP - where are you going to school?
Actually, I'm considering a good pair of boots myself. I'm looking to spend no more than 3 bills, and for them to be durable/sexy/dressy. Thoughts?

OP, you have some good ideas. My usual outfit last year was:

- MA-1
- Uniqlo BD / Flannel
- Black 511s / APC NS
- Clarks Desert Boots

Really all you need, imo. Simple works best. Mess around with colors until you find a palette you like. For example, I'm really liking the navy/brown/olive palette for this upcoming F/W.

1) dont' buy too much stuff too fast. find stuff that fits well and that you like, build your wardrobe slowly.
2) dress to the occasion. don't look like you're trying to dress up.
3) alcohol/girls/partying > clothes.

Stay away from thorogood, red wings GT's.  Paul Smith Ricard are probably the best if you want something a little more dressy, and I'm not just saying that because I'm selling a pair.  I wish mine weren't too small.  Be sure to check ebay uk, they have a better selection.
