Indochino suit just arrived - Thoughts?

My black slim -fit suit just arrived Fedex today. I also ordered a white oxoford shirt with french cuffs. They promised it would arrive by August 24 and they made good.

The packaging as you can see is very nice. You get a handsome, gold embossed box. Inside everything is packed in tissue with nice folder containing clear instruction on how to handle returns, alterations, etc.

How about the suit...?

Well, I'm no expert but the fabric and construction seem to be of good quality.

And the fit? Well, given some of the horror stories I've heard on this board, I was pleasantly surprised.  The pants are damn-near perfect, perhaps half an inch too wide at the waist.

To my eye, the jacket seems to fit pretty well. It certainly is comfortable. One thing I am concerned about is the amount of shoulder padding. It seems a tad excessive --  especailly for me since I have broad shoulders.

What do y'all think?

P.S. The shirt turned out OK. Decent fabric and fit except for one thing: its freakishly short -- about 6" shorter than most of my other dress shirts. Not sure how that happened but have emailed them for advice.

I'd suggest maybe a bit smaller in the shoulders?

+1

The shoulders seem much, much too wide.

I can't even tell if it's a shoulder width problem. It could be the padding. If Indochino allows you to dictate shoulder treatments, I'd ask for the softest/most natural shoulder they can do on my next order.

Edit: No, on second viewing, the shoulders are definitely too wide. But, in addition to a smaller shoulder measurement, you should also ask for a softer shoulder on future orders.

Yeah, the shoulders are way too padded and a little too long. Other than that, good. But the shoulders really are fairly major.

Are you trying out for the Dallas Cowboys?

This is the suit I thought I was signing up for. The shoulders do look kind of large. Maybe I should have paid closer attention.

But they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee so I'm not too worried.

There are too many things wrong with that picture that you shouldn't want that at all. But you probably don't' want to hear it.

Okay.

-The general SF consensus is that black suits should be reserved for night time/formal wear and it's not the best choice for a suit.
-The suit in general doesn't appear to drape very nicely with a lot of crinkling and pulling in odd places (chest).
-the shoulders are lumpy and wavy (the first thing I look at is the shoulder, it tells a lot about the suit).
-there's a very large gap between the collar and the lapel
-the chest of the jacket bows away and creates distance from his chest
-the shoulder seem a bit wide, but it's hard to tell
-the points on his collar are floating in the air
-stylistically, I don't like the skinny lapels nor the shoulder in general, it doesn't do much for me.

Just some thoughts.

some of it is due to the pose, but the quality of the suit isn't helping. Click my avatar, the guy is doing a similar pose, but the suit still looks fantastic (at least I think so).

Thanks Tony. Very educational. Especially your point about the lumpy shoulders. It really cheapens the suit.

To your point about the skinny lapels. For me I think they are essential because I am small framed and have a skinny face. I feel that even a 3" lapel looks a little clownish on me.

It looks mostly fine, but yeah the shoulder measurement needs to be reduced maybe 0.5" then the padding will probably look fine. What does it look like from the back?

As I just had my 60th and decided to dedicate my life to training tailoring-designers, (cutters) to have their own label and business ( factory direct)
As you know the web direct mtm is growing and is contributing to consumer control of tailoring standards and value. I would think that review sites like yours will be essential for men developing a sense of what not to do, or what to look for  on a new garment so as to not be wearing a mistake. Of course small tell tale signs get worse as the garment settles and contorts.

I am passionate about public speaking, authoring a book and using the web to bring the Significance and value of "Universal Tailoring Standards" to help the continent out of the industrial era's retail paradigm. If we are to prompt the solar age in time to defeat global warming we need to buy Think Globally and buy locally. This has major implications for what was once a large tailoring industry and a source of GDP revenue to help fight climate change.

Kind regards,

Tri-tri-trippple post..

none the less I welcome you to the community and would love to hear your opinion on the OPs suit from Indochino. - you probably could have just said it instead of asking if you can give your opinion.

To the OP:

I think the suit looks fine other than the shoulders - as everyone else agrees. You can probably tell yourself how odd some of those pics look when viewing the shoulders. In any case, Romo is right about Black suits are for formal events and are limited to actual use. If you can get a grey or navy suit instead. Otherwise fix the shoulders and you should be fine.

The suit appears to be too wrinkled out of the box which speaks against the fabric.
Unless it's a linen, then it looks like polyester blend.

In my view, you should probably wear a "boxier" suit.
