Seeing America

An interesting opportunity has arisen for me. I earned "Companion Pass" status on Southwest Airlines, which means the companion of my choosing (here, my wife) flies with me free from now until the remainder of next year. So it's like buy one ticket, get one free, except that it also works with tickets that I redeem with rewards, in which case, both tickets would be free. For those that don't know, Southwest flies only in the Continental US.

We are both from LA and have not had much travel experience in the Continental US outside of California. We're looking for ideas for places to visit outside of California, and other than Chicago, Vegas and NYC (places we recently visited). As ashamed as I am to admit it, before this, I never really had much interest in visiting most other places here in the US. Our interests tend to revolve around regional food/drink, architecture, contemporary/modern art, and of course, shopping. That being said, depending on where we go, I think we'd like to make an [aspirational] effort to do more outdoorsy things, like novice hikes, see animals, waterfalls, etc.

So here's the question. If you were me and had the opportunity to visit, say, 10 US cities as restricted above, where would you go, when, and why?

For extra credit (and appreciation!), please consider that we have a two year old that we'd like to bring with us on some of these trips. That probably makes Orlando a shoe-in.

New Orleans. Don't take the 2 year old.

Check out Nashville. The weather is very nice in September-October (November too). There's some good food, lots of good music, some neat things to see. You don't have to be a country music fan to enjoy it.

My Top 10 list, off the top of my head:

Miami (December): Art Basel Miami, leading contemporary art fair in the U.S.; Rubell family art collection; beach
New Orleans (April/May): JazzFest; great food
Washington, D.C. (March/April): Cherry Blossom Festival; great free museums; great for kids
Boston (Summer): Historical; great museums; seafood
Charleston (Spring/Fall): Romantic southern city
Austin (Spring/Fall): Live music capital of the U.S.; lot of outdoorsy activities
Glacier National Park, Montana (Spring-Fall): Get there before the glaciers melt!
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (Spring-Fall): Arguably, the finest national park
Bryce/Zion National Parks, Utah (Spring-Fall): Scenery is supposed to be amazing
Grand Canyon, Arizona (Spring-Fall): Needs no explanation

This is an excellent list. If you like to ski, add a Rocky Mountain destination or try Vermont.
