Heard this on a slate podcast and I find it a fascinating question

Sports are always evolving - look at how once even 25 years ago boxing was THE popular sport and now now mma is the top combat sport, or how Horse Racing died and nascar came swooped in, or how baseball was the national past and now we're clearly an NFL society, etc...

What sports will be tops in 50, 100, 1,000 years?

Sport, as we know it, didnt really exist 1000 years ago. I mean, yes, there were about 4 sports (fencing/swordplay, archery, jousting and then weird ass sports like the precursors to tennis and football1). The Greeks did have the Olympics and the Romans chariot racing, which were more similar to modern sports.

1 included in this is the "LETS ROLL A WHEEL OF CHEESE DOWN A 45º HILL AND CHASE IT"

Man, this movie gave me a huge per-pubescent bonar when it first came out. Wasn't there another one called Crash and Burn that was similar to it?

Great post.

By the way, I have no idea what sports will be like in 1000 years but I'm sure it will involve two combatants fighting for what will be the equivalent of a can of beans.... And probably wearing gas masks of some kind...with feeding tubes to suck up the beans once they are victorious.

Ah, a real answer...

So there are 4 basic types of sports:

Stick and Ball
Protect the goal
Racing
Combat

And you can see how they have all evolved over the past 100 years. NFL Football wasnt even fathomed 200 years ago and its a pretty odd game, really. So I have to think a new game will be invented that smashes these ideas.

Basically, I just hope baseball dies.
