Greetings Gentlemen,
I've enjoyed reading here for a while and decided to join in order to
improve my style and learn more about it.

Today I went to the MW Knoxville, to check my jacket size, since some 42R ordered from Ebay didn't fit quite well. A 42L is what i should have looked for, I'm 6'3 tall. I guess i should also learn how to measure myself well.

Anyways, while browsing through the store, actually looking for a tweed jacket and trousers, I saw some nice garments for a good price (sale).

I've read here, that the MW is not so popular amongst styleforum members and wonder why?
Please elaborate.

I did not find the tweed i was looking for.

Cheers, Gordon

I have a suit from MW which I bought nearly 15 years ago. Now, this is hardly a regular wear item, it's not like I wear it once a week. A few times a year, maybe once a month or so. But it looks as good as new. No problems with wear.

Keep in mind that more expensive suits with higher wool counts will actually wear faster than suits with lower wool counts (less expensive).

Basically once you experience a better made suit, you don't want to go back to that department store quality rubbish.

Go to MW and put on the suit you're interested in. Then go directly to Nordstrom or some other store that sells better brands and put on their best quality suit. Your budget will never be the same again.

Men's Wearhouse/Jos. A Banks is just simply not a good value. The quality of suit that you get for the price you pay is really poor. I have gotten Zegna and Oxxford suits on EBay for around $175-$250. These suits are far superior to what Men's Wearhouse offers. In addition you have to put up with the annoying sales tactics at Men's Wearhouse

Before I knew better, I picked up two sport coats from the MW. I liked the colors and patterns on both. Very versatile and quite useful for travel for work.

However, the construction was awful. On both the lining sagged below the line of the jacket with a few wearings. On one, a seam at the back opened after several uses. On the other, the seam open under the arm. On one, a button fell off after less than a year. They both remineded me of my first car, servicable if I was willing to spend the time and effort on maintenance.

I also had bought merino wool sweaters that worked out fine.

My sense is that if I really liked a pattern and I had not seen it elsewhere, I would buy with the understanding that it would be disposable only IF at steep discount.

Yeah, MW is kinda the H&M of dress attire (only less stylish... kinda the H&M of Brooks Brothers, or something along those lines). My rule of thumb is that I'd never pay a three-digit price for anything Mens Wearhouse or Jos. A Banks.

That's a Shaq-sized slap in the face for H&M. MW is like the $0.99 store of dress attire.

I've posted several times that if you want low priced new dress attire, relief is no farther than your closest Target, whose suits/sportcoats are infinitely better made than MW although certainly not the equivalent of Canali/Corneliani etc. I would put their construction with BR/H&M/Zara, though, and their styling seems fairly similar to BR as well, not incredibly inspring, but certainly not trad.

hmmm....i think you should keep buying things on those websites, getting the correct size-- but stay away from mens wearhouse-- you have access to M.S. McClellans, which is a great store. great place for ties, shirts, trousers-- buy your suits at discount, i hear the tailors at the Jos A. Bank are good for regular/ minor alterations, tho, mcclellans only does stuff from the store. if i'm not mistaken, that's the same shopping center where the best cleaners in town is? close to freshmarket on kingston pike, i remember that.

I presume the above is an exaggeration. The highest end suits on MW's website are made by Jack Victor, an extremely reputable manufacturer of partially canvassed suits. You could do a lot worse buying a suit in a bricks and mortar store than a $500 suit made by Jack Victor and I doubt anything sold at Target or BR comes close. Of course, I would agree with your comments on the other brands sold at MW (Nautica, JNY, etc.) and it is my understanding that the Victor suits are a relatively new offering at MW.
