Allen Edmonds - sole wear issue

Hello all:

First topic, hoping I can get some help. I have a pair of AE Strands that are about 4 months old. They're in rotation with some other shoes, so they get worn only once a week at most.

After their latest wear this week, I noticed a hole had worn into the left sole in an odd place (pics below). The shoes are not well worn (you can even see the heels haven't worn out the "AE" in the rubber yet). It had rained earlier in the day when I wore these shoes out; could the moisture have had anything to do with it? For whatever reason this wear issue (as shown) is only in one shoe.

I'm assuming this happened because I did something wrong. I tree my shoes (cedar trees), keep them brushed down and polished, and store them dry.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to shoe care. I'm obviously going to get these resoled, but I'd prefer not to be resoling my shoes every 4 months. Any help and feedback on what I did wrong here would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like you were walking a rough surface or stepping on something sharp that might have taken a chunk out of the sole. I can't really tell from the picture, but it looks like some cork might be starting to show.

The cork is definitely showing. This is irregular. Leather has its quirks to begin with as it is the former skin of an animal.
Sometimes there are parts of leather that are less dense than others. Have you emailed Allen Edmonds directly? I would.

Thanks; I'll definitely email AE and see what they say.

The cork is definitely showing. I know what I have to do now (replace the soles); I'm focused on where I went wrong so I don't end up doing this on 7 pairs of shoes 4 times a year! If this is just a freak occurrence (as Man of Lint suggests), then all the better.

Good chance AE will just ask you to mail them to them, they will provide you with a UPS shipping label. Good chance they'll resole at least the one shoe.

could have just been a soft spot. I'm sure AE will take care of you.

Yeah I'm willing to bet that AE will resolve the problem for you at little to no cost.

Hate to bump a weeks old thread, but I finally got around to sending my shoes back to Allen Edmonds. They're going to resole the shoes at no charge; they agreed there was something funky with the leather.

Customer service is often lacking in business these days; I have to say I was very impressed with AE the whole way through. They were excellent about responding to emails/calls and proactive about reaching out to me when they got the shoes and assessed the issue.

Bravo.

Honestly, I'm not sure there is a better shoe company regarding these types of issues.

I'm very impressed with your experience. I own two pairs of AE and each time I bought one, I've had a pleasant experience. This reaffirms my confidence in this company!

Agreed. The more I read on this forum, the more I continue to be impressed by the level of customer service that AE seems to demonstrate on a very consistent basis.

I purchased a pair of Fifth Avenues a few months ago (my first pair of AEs) and after wearing them less than 5 times, the heel started to separate. I sent an email to their customer service and they said to simply bring the shoes in and they would replace them. It took under ten minutes to get them swapped out for a new pair (inclusive of time looking around the store).

Even if I wasn't a huge fan of their shoes (which I am) their customer service is enough to keep me coming back.

As much as I like to complain about their styles from time to time...their customer service is great.

I never cared for the manner in which Allen Edmonds performs their Goodyear-welt stitching. Look at your sole and note how how they performed bottom stitching.

That allows the thread to be abraded by the elements and may possibly be wicking the moisture during your rainy day walks. Why they stitch like that when other 'quality' shoe makers use side channeled stitches baffles me.  The stitching could instead have been done using a more protective process - called "side channeling".   Google for the term "side channel goodyear stitch".

Nice to read about their likeable customer service though.
