Newbie, need a little direction

Thread Starter

Hey Guys,

Brand spanking new here. Long story short:

- I have no sense in fashion

- I still dress like I'm in college

- Want to change the above

Background:

- I live in NYC

- Grew up on the west coast with friends and family that weren't really concerned with fashion

- Recently lost 80 pounds trying to get into shape

- I'm Asian, 6'3", and 180 lbs (I know know if this is relevant)

I want wondering if you guys could direct me to some 101 articles on the forum. As I mentioned, I'm completely retarded when it comes to fashion so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. As it is right now, apparently I've been doing it all wrong, my shirts balloon and my pants are too baggy.

If you guys can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreicate it.

Thanks,

Nis

it's a bit open ended of a question. are you talking about dressy or casual. you talking about work or hanging out. you talking about men's wear or streetwear. it's all kind of subjective to where you hang out, what your work environment is like and what your personality is like. having said that, there are some pretty staple truths of what to wear and what not to wear. start stalking the waywt threads or some of the blogs. people list out what they're wearing and the more you look the more you'll figure out what's suited for your needs.

I'd like to do both dressy and casual

I work at an agency so it's pretty causal.

Good advice on the waywt thread.

quality > quantity
buy some quality basics then buy some more expensive items like jacket/jeans/shoes to go with all your cheaper basics
make sure stuff fits nicely
figure out what style you're going for then find a user(s) who resemble that style and see what they do/don't do.
can find lot's of good sales online
get proper measurements of everything before you start spending money

What exactly would consist of the "basics"?

I just searched and there were a few threads but nothing that really nailed it down.

Sorry for the newb questions guys.

Lurk until you figure out what questions to ask. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

A good start would be to get a nice slim or straight leg pair of jeans and a couple of buttons up in a size that fits. You should browse the WAYWT thread and see some examples as well as get an idea of what options are available.

Also how much are you looking to spend?

Quality is not > then quality regardless of what people on this forum tell you. You can look good in cheap stuff like H&M and Uniqlo. Just because people on this forum blow 2k on some dick doesn't mean you have to to look good.

Looking at WAWYT is horrible advice. Read up on raw denim... You probably want a pair of APCs or Naked and Famous for your first pair. Upgrade your footwear game... boat shoes, desert boots, certain loafers and certain sneakers are all acceptable at the <$100 price range.

I think the first part of dressing well is to not dress ugly. Just by throwing out all the weird graphic t-shirts and weird distressed jeans and anything that may fit a bit too big is the first step in dressing up nicely.

Oh and congrats on the weight loss. No idea what your build is but as a 6'3 Asian you need to add some muscle to that frame. Tall skinny Asian guys just look weird.
