A captoe
A suede
A double monk

All brown.

It obviously depends on age, job, lifestyle, so the question makes little sense in the way it was posed.

For a man in his mid 30s, with an average office job and a regular life:

Black oxford
Brown blucher (preferably with broguing)
Suede chukka boot

and a pair of sneakers.

"Double monks"??? Seriously?

What the hell is a "faux brogue"? I have never heard that term before in 7+ years of hanging out in the fora.

I would agree that the answer would be very situational. Having to live with a mere three pairs of shoes for all purposes would be a most miserable fate.
