I'm looking to buy a pair of brown wingtip boots. Any thoughts on the ToBoot Grange v. the Allen Edmonds Dalton. I see the Dalton also comes in a darker color closer to the Grange (no photo on website but it's in the new Sept 2011 issue of Esquire). I think they're both new, but anyone happen to see either pair in person?

This was a gift from my boss. I kept it for a few months before I just sold it. It is pretty solid. Made in USA. You can't beat the quality. If I needed a sterling silver money clip I would buy a...

I just picked this up and I am pretty pleased. Just what I expected. I am pleased with the Bark. However, I wish it was a little darker. A great deal for $35. Comparable to other belts in the...

I am a thin build girl with skinny hip and bums, I normally wear a size 25 in Paige denim, and thought I give the selvedge raw a try. The 24 of New Standard is too bulky in the high waist leg,...

ToBoot Grange v. AE Dalton boot
Thanks - you mean they say about allen edmonds generally, or these in particular? I generally like the sleeker look which AE is not traditionally known for, but in the photos at least, these seem to have some length to them.
allen edmonds on here are pretty hotly debated in general. There is a decidedly english shoe contingent that thinks AEs are blobby and unattractive, with material and assembly quality barely out of payless (i exaggerate, but you get the idea). There is another contingent that thinks AE assembles the finest shoe in the world for the common man. I'm somewhere in the middle. I own about 5 pairs, and I've been happy with them. They look good, wear well, and the lasts they have tend to fit my feet well.
With respect to these boots, someone asked about a pair of brooks bros boots, and I recommended the exact ones in your post. I was told they were trashy and fugly, to which I was a bit surprised. The thread isn't more than a few days old so a search should reveal it.
Maybe its best to look at them in person, but if I needed a high boot, I'd be good with the AE.
Interesting! I don't own any AE shoes, but my default opinion about the brand would have been very high quality traditionally too blobby for me (a skinny, long-haired European), but perhaps getting with the times in light of recent trends toward less blobby shoes. The new Esquire has a bird's eye of the boots in the darker color alongside other more expensive shoes and they don't look blobby in the least to my eyes. Will have to check out the earlier post. I guess I should check out these shoes in person!
PS - I don't need a high boot per se, but I don't own a pair of wingtips at present, and it seemed to me that this would be a pretty versatile shoe in that it's a boot, but could also be be worn with the right suit.
So I checked out that earlier thread. Not clear to me whether those folks had a particular problem with the AEs per se or just didn't like the wingtip boot thing, which is in fact quite traditional and back in these days.

I haven't compared the grommets yet. Do be careful when purchasing them regarding the size. My 4 other pairs of AE are all 10.5D but these boots were too small and I went to an 11.
