You're right that you don't need to buy a new film Leica to get the 'best' film-based image quality. But image quality is not the only goal here. It is also to own and work with a beautiful object.

Market price appears to be over $5,000 right now (based on what I've seen on eBay). If you're interested, send me a PM.

Delivery expected in the next couple of weeks . . . very excited!

I'm holding onto a 50mm Summilux ASPH to start out with. A dealer just offered me a 35mm Summilux after being on a wait list for 6 months, but I can't afford both.

Congratulations, Foo, I hope you enjoy it to its full potential.

When's your birthday? I assume Sagittarius?

Thanks--December 14.

It was tough deciding between the 35 and 50, but in my experience with my SLR, 50 is more natural to how my eyes see things.

Update: still waiting.

They sent the wrong camera back in December. They sent the correct camera last week, but with a missing engraving. The camera went back to Solms to be fixed. Should be back in NYC by end of next week.

Looked good when I saw it.

I owned an M8.2 for a while... it was OK, but not my cuppa.

Do you not like rangefinders?
I liked it in the sense that it was the best "feeling" camera I've used in my life. It just didn't speak to me like so many people suggested it would. I've run the gamut with cameras, trying to find what works best for me and not what others proclaim to be the best, period. After going Nikon, full frame Canon, Leica, etc. I've ended up at... Sony. The NEX-5N is simply perfect for my needs. It helps that it also has stellar image quality, is small, can take myriad legacy lenses (including Leica) and has all the new features which I find quite helpful in photography (tilt screen, touch screen, manual focus 'peaking', etc.). You should check it out, but only if you think it would fill a niche the MP cannot.

Sounds like you've run the full gamut. I have previously used digital point-and-shoots and film SLRs. This MP will be my first rangefinder. From what little opportunity I've had to compare, I prefer rangefinders over SLRs. I don't like the tunnel-vision effect of looking through an SLR viewfinder and I find the mirror blackout confidence-sapping. Also, I like the idea of a smaller form factor, better low light performance, and potentially superior lenses.

I'm intrigued by the growing selection of mirrorless digital options, though. The Sony NEX cameras are really well-done. My only complaint is that they are not full frame. I want my 50mm lenses to shoot like 50mm lenses. If Sony comes out with a full frame NEX (maybe the NEX-9 this year), I'd be very tempted to pick it up as a digital backup for the MP.

I will be the first in line for a full frame NEX option. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Leica just sent me these photos of the completed camera this morning. With any luck, it will be in New York by the end of the week!

It looks great. Now you just need to go shoot, develop and scan so you can post some pics in the photography thread.
