Paula Dean vs. Tony Bourdain - Page 4

I like bourdain a lot. he's not an uncomplicated guy, though. kind of typical upper-middle-class punk rocker. raised in comfort, yearned for the sh*ts. did everything he could to piss off his parents (his mom was a copy editor at the nyt, and ruth reichl says she was the only one in whole building who really scared her, which tells you basically everything you need to know). but he's really, really smart and really, really funny and has the appropriate level of self-loathing.
tom is pretty much what tom seems like. very business-like, very straightforward and plain-spoken, fairly gruff. he's a legit great chef.

Huh? Really? Seriously, is there something notably positive you can bring to my attention about this town?

That's pretty much my TV formulated view of both of them. As I noted previously, Bourdain actually cited Tom as one of the chefs he respected in his Confidential book all those years ago. There was another chef, a Brian something, he seemed to really respect too. Since Confidential became that best seller it was he seems to have developed a sincere and respectful friendship with Rippert.

Props to Tony for speaking his mind. At least he honestly said some things that he has thought (and things that a lot of others have thought but weren't willing to attach their names to). While he may not have meant everything he said, at least he was just being himself. I honestly don't think he crafted those replies to illicit a response. I don't think it's a schtick, I think that's his personality. Sometimes, it's grating and makes him come off as a...I dunno, poseur shall we say? But it's a rare moment when someone is interviewed and actually speaks his mind, so kudos for that.

Also, Guy Fieri had a Ferrari? Dude clearly should have a Fiero at best.
