j crew shirting is pretty bad, objectively. i haven't seen the thomas mason shirting, so by 'j crew shirting' i mean the normal shirts. although i think i can take a leap of faith and assume the thomas mason shirting sucks as well and/or is grossly overpriced
i think there's a void in a man's wardrobe where j crew shirting capably fills - and that's when he is in college and can manage to find JC shirts for less than $30 a piece. I think $30 per shirt is the threshold where JC shirts are 'worth it' (if youre in college). when i was in college i had a few JC shirts, but as i filled my wardrobe w/ band of outsiders, gitman, wings + horns, RRL, and hell, even BROOKS BROTHERS, i felt uncomfortable even wearing a JC shirt since (1) Every frat bro on college campus wears that stuff (2) The quality is bad, and other mall brands like brooks brothers and RL rugby beat it out ten-fold
if youre out of college and have the means to afford better, than JC shirting is a tough value proposition. "i like the patterns" isn't a valid argument since JC basically copies designs from nicer brands like Gitman and Wings + Horns when they're not churning out vanilla staples
as for the shirts themselves, the quality is atrocious. i should qualify 'atrocious' and say that JC shirts really are about-average for mall brand clothing. but when you consider the MSRP of a JC shirt, the only fair way to describe such a shirt is 'atrocious'. i see gitman shirts going on sale for $50 a piece, sometimes. gitman materials/construction are pretty good, they're made in the USA, they have great, unique fabrics and patterns, and the fit is immensely superior to JC. the fit of your average JC shirt corroborates its intended consumer - an overweight middle American who got a JC gift card from his girlfriend for christmas
some of the JC shirts i had, had this weird wash effect applied to the fabric, so that the cotton was all soft/plush/peachy feeling. i think they call it 'secret wash' or something, but it only makes a cheap shirt feel cheaper, imo. i had a couple broadcloth shirts and the fabric was criminally cheap. i can't imagine the materials for a JC shirt costing more than $2, i'd wager the materials costs are closer to $1.00-1.50
so to answer your question, i would go w/ LEC. at least you can get LEC shirts for $10-15, regularly (which tells you something about how much they cost to make)
