Quintessential 1960s style on film - Page 2

Great suggestions! Let's have some more. Oddly, the IMDB top 1960s movies list isn't that helpful; a lot of Clint Eastwood westerns and Kurosawa films. I want to them to be good movies, but I'm going for a certain aesthetic here.

The Harry Palmer trilogy is also great, especially the first two (The Ipcress File and Berlin Funeral). 1 Million Dollar Brain is kind of campy, but still good fun. Plus Michael Caine sports a great heavy winter wardrobe in that one. Good suggestions on how to appear stylish when the snow is 1 ft deep.

It also has that soundtrack.

Great suggestion, and the Burt Bacharach soundtrack is a classic.

The Italian Job has a great Quincy Jones soundtrack. Plus the opening titles' song, sung by Mat Monroe, is great. And "Self Preservation Society" was used in the Adidas commercial for the 2004 world cup (the one with the vespas). Bedazzled's was written and conducted by Dudley Moore himself (he was an accomplished composer and jazz piano player in the english 60's jazz scene). And The Ipcress File soundtrack is IMO one of the greatest John Barry scores.

Le Samourai. Most Godard movies from that period.

It's not quintessential, but it's fun, in a weird kind of way, and stylish: "What's up, Tiger Lilly". Woody Allen took a Japanese police/spy film and dubbed it with surreal dialogue. Be warned, despite some great moments, the absurdity of the whole thing is at times tedious. But it still is an interesting piece of cult filmography. The Tenth Victim is great, with its light-hearted and futuristic depiction of a world where war and crime have vanished due to the Game, where participants become alternatively prey or predator, trying to kill eachother. Marcelo Mastroianni and Ursula Anders are great, and the costumes are brilliant. And on a tangent, this is a great site for 60s style, interior design and spy movies: http://www.spyvibe.com/

Godard made a hard to find Stones documentary called 'Sympathy for the Devil' around 1968 that's one of the most badass things anyone's ever done. This is right at the point where Mick and Keef and mixing mod and hippie fashunz, making some of the best rock music ever conceived, and doing a lot of dangerous things. Worth tracking down.
