Blue Suit Brown Shoes from GQ spring style preview

I'm new here, and trying to achieve some style.  I've been browsing around, and found this getup by GQ to be very appealing.

Anybody have any alternatives(Cheaper would be great) or even links to purchase the same items from this slide?  I love the shoes which are a very rich brown.

Any idea if I can pull off this look?  I'm tall, lean, and chinese medium complexion.  6'0, 152lbs.

Howdy stankyleg,

I don't know how cheap you wanna go, but there's a slim fit line of clothes at Banana Republic and they have an inexpensive suit that fits much of this billing. Navy blue (but more blue than dark navy) with a bit of shimmer to it. Somewhat slim pants with a flat front. The photos of the suits on the models just don't capture what the suit looks like when you try it on. It's trimmer than the sacks that are on the website. You do get what you pay for, but it is a slim fitting blue suit that would look great with the brown accessories pictured in GQ. Retails for about $500, but they had been running a 30% off online thing.

Of course, evey department store on earth should have some blue suit that's inexpensive. But a lot of those department stores have more traditional looks with longer jacket lengths and less trim pants than this Prada suit you linked to.

Oh... and I should mention that the photos on BR's site don't show you exactly how blue it is in person. I think it's close to what you're looking for.

Am I the only one who thinks those pants look ridiculous? They look like tights...

You found that look appealing because it is very simple. Navy suit, light blue shirt and brown shoes and belt. It's one of the first things every man should own.

The cut of the suit is pretty modern as suggested BR would probably do but keep reading threads and search within your budget.

Thanks everyone for all the input thus far.

regarding the fitting, the GQ model appears to have the suit cut a bit short in the pants revealing some skin at the foot and a bit short in the jacket sleeve revealing a good amount of cuff.  Is this the trend for cotton suits?

More the trend for GQ to fit models in clothes that are too small and don't fit.

A navy suit with brown shoes/belt is considered a staple. In fact many would say if you only have 1 suit, a navy one should be it. As has been said, most stores out there will have them. I have one that I really like that I got from the ebay seller, style-wizard (aka Wizard of Aahs). As for that particular style, it really depends on your body type. If you are very slender with skinny legs, it might work for you. However, I never have been built like that (too many years playing sports and lifting weights not to mention beers and things) so that style has never worked for me. You might want to consider that even if you are built for it, it is a fashion style and as such, will go out of fashion. If it is your only suit do you want it to look dated next year?

a picture of my "blue suit brown shoes" combo
the 2nd picture shows my belt color more accurately
everything looks darker in the first photo
the suit is a hugo boss red label.. very slim fitting
although i was excited when i bought this suit last year, i regret the purchase a lot now
not just because i learned that hugo boss suits are constructed poorly and i overpaid big time for it
but because the slim fit is a trend and i should have gotten a more classic cut
i am not even all that muscular but when i sit down my thighs look like they're about to rip the pants

It looks really good imo

Doesn't look overly slim nor tight in the pics.

A few points:
  • That suit is far too slim and the trou too short. Don't fall prey to GQ's male fashionista advice.
  • I'd advise against a cotton suit, unless you already have one or two in wool to begin with. You can find a slimmer cut navy suit relatively affordably, at Brooks Brothers. Check out their Milano line.
  • Allen Edmonds makes inexpensive shoes in that color (Chestnut) in many different styles. They're not the best shoes in the world, but they're among the best around $300.
  • I cannot recommend Banana Republic unless you get their clothing at clearance-level prices.
  • Check out the WAYWRN thread here, where I am sure you will see many navy/chestnut combos.
  • Lurk and learn.

I think the suit looks great on you.

I have a hugo boss red label too, except in charcoal.  I love the fit of the red label, however I found out the quality wasn't what I expected it to be since it is a fused suit.

XKx, I think you look smashing. Try not to regret your fashionable purchase. You can always get a regular Timeless Suited Man Uniform next time. That thing's not crazy slim like the pants in that GQ article, so you got some time with it. I like that the notch lapel tones down the slim look. If it had peak lapels, you'd probably be too jaunty for me.

thanks for the compliments
but if you saw the suit in person... and saw me move in it
and especially SIT in it
i think most would agree that it's too slim and too tight around the thighs (and a bit short at the bottom as well)

i am going to have it looked at by a tailor to see if maybe the pants can be let out a bit around the thighs...
and maybe a bit around the butt as well
hopefully there is enough material to do this... but it'll probably cost me

Don't worry it looks good, people who can't fit in a slim suit are just jealous we can (and lucky that their suit size availability and price point is much lower than us).

OP check out Rugby, they sometimes have suits and the quality is excellent and the fit is slim and nice like your pic. I have a Navy pin stripe, and always wear brown shoes with it. Compliments come around more than I can take in sometimes.
