I think I was the only person not working in porn during my last stay over at Hilton LAX. Lots of mid-western dreams being crushed.

dropped a whole can of Dr. Pepper on the carpet in that hotel when I was 6, circa 1988. Didn't even know what Dr. Pepper was because I'd been in the US for like an hour at the point, first time in my life.

Manhattan Beach is close and quite scenic. Walk around town and on the strand or rent a bike for a few hours and bike up the coast, lots of bars in MB and many hotties. Make sure you feed the parking meters and carefully read all of the parking signs when you park - everywhere in southern California. I'm serious.

Come on guys. I know you must have some good suggestions for me. Beach is cool, but how about some other stuff?

Im not the best at this since my life revolves around booze and bitches, but I'll take a stab and assume your within 5 miles of LAX, wont have a car and want to keep costs low ...

South of LAX - Manhattan beach and chill out for a day and take in the beach community vibe. Rent a bike and stroll south down the strand to the other beach towns, lots of volleyball, sun bathers, house parties, etc... (In fact, I'll be in one of these towns - hermosa beach - this saturday for a pub crawl)

North of LAX - Marina Del Rey/Santa Monica/venice Beach. Shopping, tourist vibe. Walk up the ocean front and take in the scene there. In fact, this is probably what I'd recommend to someone. Park your car on Washington St. in MDR and just stroll up the coast for the quintessential california scene .... mind=blown. You can easily spend a day doing this and another in santa monica just strolling around the promenade or

East of LAX - Hollywood park horse racing? haha. Not much there. Maybe hit up Culver City and walk around town.

Other things you can do if money is no real concern that are old stand-bys: Get beat up at a dodger game, visit the getty center, do the hollywood tourist thing (meh), go to the hollywood bowl (my fav), go to the museum area and hit up the tar pits and LACMA, go downtown to LA live area for entertainment and check out the up-and-coming downtown scene, go hiking in palos verdes or near malibu,

Read LA Weekly.

Whenever I have to play tour guide to someone visiting L.A. for the first time, I stick to the basics.

Visit the Getty Center, walk around Third St. Promenade in Santa Monica or The Grove in L.A., dinner in downtown and drinks at the Standard Rooftop bar. Depending on the visitor, I sometimes end up spending the day at Universal Studios and walking around Universal Citywalk in the evening.
