Hike the Inca trail to Macchu Pichu while you're young. You can then bum around Lima Peru for a bit. It's cheap, has a great dining scene, and has lots of travelers and wominz.

Here's a really informative website on backpacking to various places around the world:

but if you're young and alone, I would recommend Eastern Europe or SE Asia. You'll meet tons of other kids backpacking too, can stay in cheap places, and can get from one place to the next pretty cheaply. South America will involve longer travel distances, which costs more, and probably be less densely packed with travelers like you. Eastern Europe is great -- do either the northern part from Hungary to the Baltics, or the southern part from Croatia to Ukraine. Good food at reasonable prices, lots of hot girls, plenty to see, and plenty of partying to do. SE Asia is great fun too and dirt cheap. You can visit a bunch of countries, the food is great, getting around costs nothing, hotels cost nothing, and there is a lot to see.

Also, go to FlyerTalk now, sign up for some credit cards with big sign-up bonuses, and get your round-trip for free.

I guess I'm assuming you're going for a while. Was that the plan?

this is sound advice.

There are 100+ correct answers. It just depends upon what you are looking for. I think I would spend a couple of weeks in the Philippines, jump to Indonesia for a week or two, then finish up in the Philippines. This could all be done with $4K.

Sometimes spending more money only takes you further away from a genuine experience. Mix in some couch surfing. Get off the beaten path. If you see backpacking kids everywhere you go then you are doing it wrong. And congratulations for being confident enough to want to go it alone. It can be invigorating.

Roman, I lived in several sub-Saharan countries for about 6 months doing a variety of things: working in HIV/AIDS clinics, HIV education, getting community centers started, etc. Sobering work but very rewarding because of the people I met all over the continent.

If you're an experienced traveler, don't mind eating strange things with your hands, and don't get sick easily, then I highly recommend it. Places you'd want to see include:

1. Victoria Falls (go in the June/July months when the water level is highest)
2. Either Chobe National Park in Botswana for an overland/river safari or the Mara in Kenya (the latter is more expensive but worth it)
3. Kilimanjaro, while the glaciers are still there. Plan on spending 6-9 days doing this, depending on the route and make sure you're physically fit. The cheapest you could do this would be around $1500 though, which stinks but it's worth it, especially if you're doing a full-moon ascent; absolutely other-worldly.
4. Zanzibar was one of my favorite places in Africa. Very affordable, great seafood, and a welcome break after you've spent a couple weeks/months on the continent.
5. Doing a gorilla trek in Rwanda. Very cool and not too expensive.
6. Never made it down to Cape Town but everybody tells me it's a blast, especially if you like to surf.

I have also lived in sub Saharan Africa and would confirm what burnbright said about Vic Falls and Botswana in general. I have not made it to Rwanda or Zanzibar but places I would add to the list would be Malawi, Lamu, Serengeti.

In South Africa one possibility would be to start in Jo'burg and drive via Durban and around the coast to Cape Town. Zimbabwe is a great country to visit but perhaps not now.

Do not forget to take whatever Malaria pills are recommended for the area you are travelling in in Africa.

In Europe- if you like walking with your backpacking NAMOR I would suggest the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Your money will go a long way and the cost of getting there will be less than Africa.

Travelling alone sounds depressing. What are you going to do at night? Go to bars and clubs by yourself? I travel with like minded friends, but usually do some sight seeing and touring alone.
