once they get over like a thousand, two thou, they won't open them up for you like that because you're in the $100-200 shot category, but I'd figure like what, a grand a shot on that? Some other bar has the Louis XIII black pearl in the black lalique bottle for like $20K. Can't even imagine the feeling of dropping 20 nuggets on a bottle of booze, most expensive pee pee in the world at that point.

$15k seems like a huge upcharge for a 35 year old bottle, unless it's really limited supply or something. You could literally buy 10 bottles of 25 year old Mac and 10 of 30 year old HP for that and probably still have money left over

those were 500,000Y street price when they came out and sold out immediately; somebody had to bring that over in a suitcase, so fair enough, I feel. Definitely a bottle for someone with more money than brain cells.

So I'm having scotch and cigars with a mate tomorrow night. He's only ever had chivas and jw black before but wants to try a malt. The two malts at the agreed price are talisker 10 and dalwhinnie 10. I've been dying to try talisker and he reckons he can handle it, but I don't want to ruin his first malt experience. Just how punchy is it?

Ontop of my kitchen stand i have Macallan 12, Lagavulin 16, Balvenie 12 Doublewood and then some johnnie walker black in case i want to make a cocktail or someone comes over who likes it for some strange reason. The macallan i can't really drink. Too syrupy and sweet. The Balvenie i much prefer for that sherry cask type sweet stuff. The Lagavulin i'm absolutely in love with. Gonna be really sad when this bottle is out.

When I let my friend try his first single malt. It was Mac 12, and he didn't enjoy it. The following day, I let him try Glenlivet 12 and crack open a bottle of Talisker 10. He really enjoy the Talisker. In fact, he bought my bottle of Talisker that night.

Quite. It is more intense than some of Islay's mildest malts (but nothing like Ardbeg or Laphroaig). I've seen a lot of first time whisk(e)y drinkers love it. I've seen people who have been drinking Canadian Club since the 70's find it revolting. YMMV.

The flavor profile is also strong enough to overwhelm some cigars.

Tali does have some peat, but I don't find that it's a prominent note, also due to where they source their water it does have a distinct seaweed note, which can be offputting for some. I don't find the 10 particuarly punchy, it is moreso than the 18. I<3 is correct in that its palate can be pretty heavy...

Hey now... if you want to talk about that, we'd also have to talk about your peasant-status Scotch buys.

Anyway, if you're following that general rule of thumb (pair intensely flavored Scotch with mild cigar or mild Scotch with bold cigar), Talisker would fall into that "intensely flavored" category (Dalwhinnie in the mild).
