Swaine Adeney Oxford Holdall/Duffel

I'd like to get a new duffel bag for short trips and was thinking about the 19" Oxford from Swaine Adeney. I was planning on getting it in Havana, but thought I might give Chestnut a shot instead since I already have other SAB bags in Havana and London Tan.

What do you think? (pic attached) For the money, are there any other options you would recommend?

I've seen several SAB chestnut leather items in the past that I haven't cared for, but I really do like the hue on this bag.

I prefer chestnut on luggage, I'm not crazy about it on business items.

I have this bag in canvas with bridle leather trimmings (don't know if SAB still makes it). What kind of travelling are you planning to do with it? I ask as I only used mine as a carry-on once, as even with the lighter canvas I still found it too cumbersome to drag around an airport when fully packed. And I thought it could have benefited from some outside compartments. But it's great for car/train travel.

I'm planing to use it for 2-3 day trips on the plane. Do you have the 19" version? Was it awkward because of the dimensions or more because it was heavy when loaded up.

When I'm traveling for several days, I usually just use a 22" Tumi wheeled suitcase.

Yes it's the 19" carry-on size I've got. Cumbersome due to both weight and dimensions - not ideal to carry with the shoulder strap when fully loaded. I got a wheeled Rimowa trolley for flying instead and only use the SAB for car travel and the like.

I find my duffel too cumbersome for air travel when it's completely full. Mine is also canvas trimmed in leather, and has good pockets on each end. When not full, it works great for short trips, and I've even packed a suit in it, but when full, it's a bit too heavy and awkward to carry. I never use the shoulder strap, and won't. For longer trips I now take my 18" trunk-style roller.

It's unfortunate about this bag. I was about to pull the trigger, but now am thinking I might not. Do you know if they make a slight smaller sized holdall?

I did end up buying the holdall, but it had a little more of a red hue in it than I expected. Do you know if Chestnut typically darkens and becomes more brown with age?

In retrospect, I might have been safer with Havana.

I think the chestnut is the colour with the most ageing potential out of all of them.

You are probably right, I think (hope) the red hues will eventually tone down with use.

I contemplated London Tan but thought that with a holdall/duffle that is well used, London Tan might look more "dirty" vs. develop a nice patina with age.
