Marks on Leather Shoes Natural or Imperfections?

Hey everyone, I just got these shoes from Herring Shoes (http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?selectedColourID=1071&brandID=6&catID=43&shoeID=2013&selectedSizeID=0&selectedFitID=0]). They are made by Cheaney for Herring, and I really like the design and color. Once I received them, I noticed some marks/bumps in a few different areas of the leather. Below I posted photos taken with and without the flash before the shoes were even tried on. The flash made them more pronounced than they are, but they are definitely still visible without it. Herring shoes said that the marks are just the nature of the leather and a different pair might not be any better. I need to decide if I want to keep them or return them. Will these same types of marks be on a pair of Allen Edmonds, Aldens, or C&J? (those were the other companies I was considering) I will get used to the marks if they will occur with other nicer leathers as well, but would return these if those other companies would likely not have such markings. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks.

The shoes in the photo on their website have the exact same markings, probably the way they are manufacturered.
It is completely acceptable and normal so no need to worry about it. If 100 men bought exactly the same shoes and wore them for a week, no 2 pair would look exactly the same as every man wears his shoes slightly differently. You'll really celebrate when you get your first scuff! Congratulations on your purchase and enjoy in good health.

I have to agree! The shoes look great and yes they don't have a "perfect surface" but hey let's not forget that those are leather shoes and actual high quality leather always has its own "marks" satisfied.gif

I bet some renovateur and a horsehair brush would smooth that finish out nicely.

Leather lotion and polish. But I agree that the shoes look nice.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm glad to hear that it's not a big problem (or a problem at all really) and that they will smooth out. I really do like them and am glad that it wouldn't be much different if I ordered elsewhere. I want to add that Herring had great customer service. The shoes got to California in 3 days, and they threw in shoe polish and a shoe horn for free.

Hi, I work in a factory that makes leather items. Leather is skin, there are imperfection. When you buy hides from tanneries you can ask for the better leather sides but they will be at a much higher cost. On a side of leather there are good and bad areas as you'd guess. One the first picture they used a part of the belly. This naturally has the wrinkles.
The second picture looks like fingernail or tool marks. If these shoes are handmade in a factory you might get this human element. The last photo looks like the leather was dried next to a heater. Or maybe it was belly leather and and didn't take to stretching. I have no idea on this one. I made holster so I'm too shoe how shoes are made. We can use the worse leather and get away with it.

Personally I could live with either the wrinkles or the scratches, but not both plus the cracks on the toe. Sorry bud.
