What's the Worst Getup You've Been Forced to Wear as a Groomsman?

The time was 1978 - so that alone tells you sumpin'

A taupe tux with VERY wide and peaked taupe satin lapels. The trou, of course had the same satin accent on the seam - were most likely a bit flared at the hem but I don't really recall. Peach colored ruffled shirt. White bow tie (approximately the size of a Volkswagen). Peach rose bouttoniere.

I don't remember but I'm sure the shoes must have been black.

The sad thing is that this would have been considered fairly tasteful in middle class, middle America, at the time. (Not saying it was tasteful by more sophisticated standards, mind you.)

I can only hope the photos were burned when the couple divorced 20 years later.

Pretty much anytime I'm forced to wear a cumberbund.

I have been a best man twice, Wore a rented tux that was "ok" at one of the weddings. Not something that I would do for my wedding..but whatever.
2nd time was a wedding in the Dominican Rep and my friend got married at his the house of his wife's grandfather. I was rockin jeans and a linen shirt(as was the groom!)

Had to wear this too-baggy, notch lapel tux with center vent, pocket flaps and cuffs that didn't even have faux buttonholes for my best friend's wedding last summer... Oh wait, that was my tux that I hadn't found a suitable replacement for yet. Shit, my bad .

At least I didn't care about leaving the jacket on a chair and dancing with the rest of the gang (it was outdoors and we'd been drinking heavily). Had I been wearing my present getup (Zegna), I probably would have been the one off to the side making sure nothing spilled on me.

Will be very tough to beat... My worst is between a Texas Tuxedo (formal coattails, worn in jeans, belt with a giant rodeo buckle, a bolo tie, my old cowboy work boots) and another time I had to wear a rental complete with top hat and cane.

While at an area vinyard recently, there were preparations underway for an evening wedding. The groomsmen showed up wearing matching light grey suits, white shirts, bright pink ties . . . and black chuck taylors.

What did you guys have your groomsmen wear?

I'm not married, but when I get married, it'll depend on the formality of the wedding. Assuming black tie, I'll specify black tux, black bow tie, white shirt and black (or no) waist covering. Other than that, I really won't care (can go wing or turn-down, pique or pleat front, studs or covered placket, cummerbund or vest, SB or DB, peak or notch, single, double or ventless, patent or calf, lace-up or slip-on, etc.). If I can afford it (and probably can't) perhaps matching (nice) tuxes would be my groomsmen gift, otherwise I'll probably tell them I'll contribute up to $xxx for whatever getup they want if they don't own one (purchase or rental), and my only request (other than meeting the above criteria) is that it fits properly.

I've been in quite a few weddings, so I've seen my fair share of ill fitting rentals and matchy matchy atrocities, but the tropical wedding I was in definitely took the cake. The groom had us in deliberately putrid barf and brown coloured Hawaiian shirts and sandals. As someone above said.....it's their day. It's their day.

I know everyone keeps saying "it's their day", but that usually applies only to the bride, since they're the only ones that generally care about and plan the wedding for most of their lives. Guys generally don't care, and usually just do whatever their fiancee suggests he do. I think what usually happens is the bride says "My colors are going to be x and y, therefore your groomsmen have to wear tuxes with matching bow ties and vests", because that's 'normal' and all she cares about are the bridesmaids. And the guy says "Whatever, that's fine", because he doesn't know any better. So should the rules of not speaking out against and suggesting better bridal party attire not apply to the groomsmen, if the groom has no interest in the decision making process to begin with?

I told them to wear a dark suit.

Didn't want them shelling out $125+ for an ugly tux rental.

Never understood why the wedding party has to wear a uniform on the big day. It's a silly tradition, as are most wedding rituals.
