Matching pocket squares to ties

I'm attending a friends wedding and am one of the groomsmen. I have been asked to wear a lime green tie with a matching pocket square. I'm usually good with matching my ties and shirts but I've never put on a pocket square and I don't know what fashionable/trendy. I'd greatly appreciate if someone can give me ideas/pics/links to images so I don't look like a goof :)

I'll be wearing a black suit.

Thanks!

There's not much admiration on SF for black suits but if it's for a formal wedding that's a better reason to wear one than most. Lime green? Seriously?

Matching a tie to a pocket square is a bit of an amateur/noob move. It's better if they have complimentary colours. If the tie is a solid, then maybe a patterned PS with one of the colours in the tie reflected in the PS is a big step up.

If it IS a more formal wedding and all the groomsmen are in black suits and white shirts, a white TV fold linen pocket square would be a better choice than matching it to the tie IMO, but as your man above here says, unless you can sway a little subtle influence over the groom and/or bride you'll just have to roll with it.

I have a solid lime green Ralph Lauren tie - worn once. Not so crazy about it - PM me if you want more information.

(I know this isn't buying and selling - just trying to help OP and myself at the same time.)

Thanks for the prompt responses guys.

So I  "swayed a little subtle influence over the groom" and was able to convince him that matching the tie and pocket squares won't look good. So we agreed that all the groomsmen will wear some shade of green tie. Any suggestions on what we should do re: the pocket squares? Should we all just get white pockets squares with a TV fold?

Thin White Duke, my suit is not a solid black suit but I don't know how to describe it. I've attached a picture of the material, for what it's worth.

Again, thanks very much.photo (2).JPG

it will be hard to not look like a goof with a black suit and matching lime green tie and pocket square. but if that's what the groom asked you to do, then i guess you're stuck unfortunately.

Ugh, I wouldn't go if I had to wear that get up.

from a fasion standpoint this is no good, but your job as the groomsmen is to be respectful of the grooms wishes. It is kind of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

Sadly, I think these choices are often made by the brides, so trained by magazines and reality shows to stick to their wedding colors. Unfortunately, most women know nothing about menswear and yet try to dictate what the men in the wedding should wear. Black suits, green ties and matching pocket squares...all of you will be looking like goofs. But who cares?! Ultimately, it's not about you - it's about the bride & groom.

The one piece of advice I can give you to make you look less goofy: make sure that suit is tailored to a T and tie yourself a beautiful knot. My cousin had a similarly goofy matchy-matchy wedding get-up. However, his brother actually looked good because his suit fit him quite well, while everyone else had sleeves and pant legs that went on for miles.

I posted a comment last night with a picture of my suit material, and I was told my post was being moderated?!? It's an MTM suit.

Anyway, I was able to sway the groom away from the match-tie-to-ps get-up. The only requirement now is green ties... and as mentioned by one of the posters above, primarily dictated by the bride as the best color that would match the decor.

With that said, what would be the best tie-ps combination for all us groomsmen, something subtle so we don't look like waiters either :)

Again, thanks for all your feedback, this is my first thread here.

Dark forest green tie, and a patterned PS that contains dark green but does not exactly match the tie.

Really, the groom should have you all wearing the SAME green ties if that is what "she" wants. why have various shades of green? the best look is(as stated above) is a well tailored suit and a green tie and white PS. Basic. Done. Over and out!

+1 and shoes. If they are highly polished and aren't square toes this plus the above can minimize lime green matchy-matchy

I'm starting a new thread so as not to derail this one, but it has inspired me to gather stories of the worst crap you've ever had to put on for a wedding

Would it be so bad to wear a white linen pocket square with just the edge the same color as the tie?
