The Original comes from John Lobb (a long time before there were two firms). I believe, the original design is from the 1920s and was named after William Lobb (son of the founder) who was the MD at the time.

I don't know if the design with or without toe cap, is the older of the two.

Here is a picture (might be the same sample shoe) from a late 60s/early 70s JL catalogue.
Nice post, thank you.

Posting Bengal. But must be either not JL or JL well prior to the 20s. In this pic TE Lawrence on left wears doubles and brother Will seated on right singles. circa 1908

I don't believe you don't know what I know, but anyway, here's what I know.
A monk shoe was of course a shoe worn by monks in the Alps around the 15th century.
In the 19th century, Lobb made monk shoes for Prince Edward who had wide feet.
Later in 1945, John Lobb started to produce double monk shoes 'William.'

Unlike blutcher(derby) which was designed by Prussian general Blutcher and widely used for outdoor activities such as hunting,
monk shoes were worn with suits. Hence, considered more formal than derby shoes.

Correct me if there are incorrect ones.

i'm/was aware of the single monk and blucher stories. just wanted to know, who invented the hideous double monk design.

John Lobb takes credit for that creation.

I currently wear suits only with double monkstraps. It looks good with cut to the bones trousers.

How do double monk straps look with a suit? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on these from Paul Stuart:

Please note: I am going to buy them and wear them with suits anyway

No problem with monks with suits, just as long as your work environment is not stiff and stern.

I actually think that double monks often go better with suits than single monks. The only reason for which I do not wear my only double monks with suits is that they are suede double monks, and I do not wear suede with suits (all my suits are worsted wool suits).
I saw a very nice dark brown leather pair of C&J double monks and was going to buy it, but unfortunately the last was clearly wrong for my feet.
