How-to Gift a Trip (to Paris, probably)

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out a good 30th birthday gift for my girlfriend. She has always wanted to visit Paris (and missed out on an opportunity once which she always regretted). I thought giving the gift of travel would be nice, but I have problems with this because she just started a new job and I have no idea when she will be able to go. Is it possible to book airline tickets with no set departure date? Or possibly give some sort of gift certificate to a travel company (but that can only be used for the destination of my choice). I mean I'm sure I can give her like an American Airlines gift certificate, but theres no guarantee she'd use it for France -- and the point of this gift would be to essentially force her into doing something she's wanted to do but has been reluctant to do for financial reasons.

Any ideas on how to go about doing this?

How about telling her that you want to make her that present and then setting up the date etc together? The only problem could be that she refuses to do it because of the financial reasons. Sitll better to talk to her than booking any random date. I doubt there are gift certificates with a given destination. Don't see te point.

Thanks for the response.

I agree, telling her is the easiest way. And, maybe making some sort of gift she can open that would show trip ideas etc would be a good idea. But, if there is a way to essentially make her have no choice but to go at some point then I'd like to go that route.

If all else fails I guess I'll have to just do it in the way you suggested.

Talk to her boss and explain the situation. The boss can probably tell you how much leave she has and when she can take it.

His GF just started the job. Don't talk to her boss about taking time off. You will make her look like a sap. You are her BF not her husband.
Get a card and something which spells out that you are gifting her(with you) a trip to Paris. Tell her that you know that she just stared a job but that you want to plan a good time for the both of you to go...and then book the trip and go. Over a long wkend or a 3 day holiday wkend, she may only need to take 2 days off.

OP, if your girl is gonna be 30, I am guessing that you are around the same age...

I appreciate the suggestions -- but I guess you are "dense" for not understanding what I am saying. If I just paste a picture in a card and say "we are going" it will never happen. If, instead, I gave her open-ended flight tickets, or a hotel gift certificate (only to be used in that hotel/city/etc) then we would be forced to go. Just telling her "we are going...um, but whenever you can..." is essentially saying "I had a great idea, but basically when you forget about it the trip will never happen..."

Like I said in my original post, I want to do it in a way that forces her to go, and I was hoping someone here maybe had a good suggestion. As always, the snark prevails. For those who gave some decent suggestions without the tongue-in-cheek: thanks.
