Constructive ideas on improving the forum - Page 30

I got some abuse here for answering every post instead of leaving brief comments in the "thumb": I'd assumed from other fora that is was just a "like button" to accrue "reputation" to the user - a system I've always loathed as a teenaged wankfest.

Don't change it.  People are used to having a bunch of one line comments in the "thumb" after posting a pic.  And these threads of several hundred pages are bad enough as it is!

Anyway, a suggestion:

Buying and selling is a nuisance with so many posts to plough through.  Would it be possible to build in a search by size function and make the buy and sell more of a database with standardised parameters, like eBay does?  This isn't just for the convenience of the buyer - although I would like it.  It's for the seller, too: if you're selling, say, a pair of shoes, you've got a much better chance of someone searching by their size deciding they like your shoes, than someone who likes shoes being bothered to search through every single thing they like hoping something is their size.  Search by size is one of the most effective attributes of an e-commerce site, as it encourages browsing and impulse buying!

I agree that B&S is a huge pain nowadays. Size searching would be great. Also a condensed view would be nice to get more listings on a page.

Who wants to see a million pics of socks some guy is selling on the front page of the whole damn forum? The featured content section also takes up too much space imo - perhaps it could be integrated into the scrolling picture bar thing at the top - which I think looks really good.

By far the best feature of the front page is the recent activity section - through this I have discovered new threads and whole new sections of the forum that I would never have visited otherwise. It should get a better billing on the front page imo - currently I have to scroll down to see it as it get's pushed off the bottom of the screen by the "scrolling picture bar thing" (which is good) "featured content" (less good) and "recent photos" (crap). "Recent activity" is also constantly changing, unlike the three sections above it, so if it had a higher billing on the front page - underneath the scrolling picture bar for instance - it would make the site look more dynamic.

tldr: get rid of recent photos; merge featured content into scrolling picture bar; give recent activity higher billing; get better, cleaner looking more dynamic front page, increased activity across the forum, more cross posting, harmony, world peace.

I'm glad to see my advice has been taken.

not the biggest fran of the gallery system - clunky and too facebook-esque

Here's an idea but not sure even I like it- just throwing it out there.

Is it possible to use the "@" functionality ala Twitter or Facebook...

For example... "Take a look at the suit that @Teger posted..."

Then Teger gets notified of an activity involving him.

Perhaps to easy to abuse but could be useful?

what would the be the advantage of that?

When I search a keyword, I would love it if I would get the results to actually show me an excerpt of that keyword and a link to go to that specific post. I am not sure if this capability is supposed to be there, but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Exactly! happy.gif

Seriously though... when somebody invokes you in a post, it draws your attention to it. That way you can ad to the conversation, correct it, whatever.

Works well in Facebook.

Works well in Facebook.
Problem is, usernames are often abbreviated.

Right- but if you type, say:

@b1... it auto-fills or gives you a list of member names.

Probably not worth it... random thought

I know that this forum software at least supports quote notification, since I have seen it on another site using the same stuff.

I'd like a forum calendar where people could post all those "When is the next sale" crap and even open coupon codes that have expiration dates (probably less useful for singles)

Also, I still think another classifieds forum for group buys, MTOs, and other custom SF-specific type buys would be nice.

Get rid of that ridiculous 'mod-approve-prior-to-post' rule for new members. It's an absolute and horrid turnoff for new members and puts them off from joining. This is a bloody styleforum for God's Sake. Pictures are essentially quite vital for good discussion and restricting new members from posting any is just plain stupid. As much as I understand that some people might spam, I am also very sure that constitutes a minority and letting a small amount ruin it for the majority is idiocy. If the vetting period is only maybe 10minutes then fine, by all means. I've posted for over a day and still dont see any. By the time my posts appear (if they ever will), they'll probably be so outdated and it seems like in digging backwards in a thread to make a probably-pointless-by-then comment.

Wonderful system, whoever came up with it
