What is your favorite gift to give newly weds?

I am doing research on gifts for newly weds. My experience over the years is that there are a few fad items that will be popular and then there are the classics. What do you buy a newly wed?

My go-to, is a sterling silver picture frame. Or, a gift certificate to a nice, local restaurant. What is yours?

Honestly, I always get them a tree, or gift certificate to a nursery in their area, so that they can plant the tree after their marriage, and throughout the course of their marriage (assuming they don't move) they can watch the tree grow and branch out, just as they, as a couple and a family, grow and branch out. And one day, they can look back at the tree when it's huge and regal, and realize that their relationship is the same.

It sounds corny as hell, I know, but people have always really appreciated it.

I like a box of spices and condiments, with some small kitchen tools.

kwilk, at a friend of mines wedding a few years ago, they had fruit from a tree that his godparents had given his parents when he was born. I think that that is a cool idea that you have

If you are looking at a couples registry, do you have favorite items that you usually look for?

Do you give trees to married couples that live in an apartment or rent?

Sweet yes. Sensible no. I know only two couples that still live in the same city since marriage and only one of them in the same house, one moved within town. And that's out of I don't know probably a couple hundred not very old people.

So if the spiel when you give them a tree is that they can "watch the tree grow and branch out, just as they, as a couple and a family, grow and branch out. And one day, they can look back at the tree when it's huge and regal, and realize that their relationship is the same" they need to sneak into someone's backyard.

Of course I don't give a tree to people that live in an apartment. And most of the people I know that have gotten married have already been "settled" and haven't/won't move. I'm sorry you think it's a silly idea. It's been very appreciated and people have been touched by it. You want to get someone some piece of shit silverware that they put on their registry? Feel free. Your opinion on my gift giving isn't necessary or appreciated.
